It also released in a period where the direct competitor basically run the genre to the ground and drag it for kilometres, the timing is just right that people remember they actually like cozy farming sim like Harvest Moon. There is no other choice before Stardew, other than Harvest Moon and Story of Seasons, one is only a shell of its former glory, and the other one is locked behind a console.
