A post by Trump on Truth Social of a doctored image of his Wikipedia page adding that he is the Acting President of Venezuela

Donald Trump recently made a Truth social post with a doctored Wikipedia page that added he was the Acting President of Venezuela.

What are some examples of past leaders making similar claims?

I assume empires did it a lot, and that it’s been done a lot as a pretext for war, but I’m pretty ignorant of historic examples.

Historically, it is common. A prominent example are the monarchs of England (and later Great Britain), who claimed the Kingdom of France even hundreds of years after losing the Hundred Years’ War. They financially renounced their claim in 1802.

In modern times, it is less common outside of certain morons, but there are still a few examples, for example China and the Republic of China (Taiwan) claiming each other’s territory (Taiwan dropped the claim in 1991). For the most part, claims in modern times concern parts of other sovereign states’ territories (e.g. the disputed territories in Kashmir).
