As an American who has actually studied WW2 history, I’ve decided which to use myself, but here’s the reality : the US is fully a police state. Our regular local/county/state police all play para-military as well. Since those enforcers are going to be the most common interaction they most citizens would experience, I personally decided to refer to them as SA/Brown Shirts since they largely act as thugs.
So with local police acting as brown shirts, I think it makes sense to refer to Feds (in general) and ICE specifically as Gestapo especially since their primary MO is to disappear people.
The whole “hidding your face when doing evil” thing could just be considered as the American Flavour, kinda like having a Fashion Designer design the uniforms could be seen as European Flavour.
