Remake of an older meme, just to add some extra pixel.

This chonky boy is 19 this year. He has dual Xeon quad cores, and 32gb of DDR2 and a 980Ti. He streams 4K videos with ease and plays most of my Steam library. He’s running Mint. And he eats about 425W while he does it.

10 years old is rookie numbers
Commendations on the shop. Very clever.
I can tell by the pixels and from seeing a few shops in my day
Note for second (or more) language speakers of English (and maybe a few first language folks as well): The plural ‘s’ is omitted when a sentence fragment is turned into an adjective. It’s supposed to have hyphens in it as well, though these are often left out.
So, for example, “My PC is ten years old and runs Linux” becomes “My ten-year-old PC runs Linux”.
In the case of this meme, it should be “My 10-year-old PC”.
I recently done a full install of Linux Mint on an old Lenovo Laptop, even with a new RAM Stick, taking it to 14GB of RAM it was still very sluggish running Windows. There was so much Windows and Lenovo bloatware it was wild. Ever since I installed Linux Mint the laptop has worked a dream - It’s like a whole new machine.
I just did this with a 2010 MacBook Pro (only 8gb of ram) and I can’t tell you how happy I am about it.
I did this same thing with a sony viao I had and Elementary. It was running into some serious performance issues running win 7 back when the OS was sunsetting for win 8. Brought it back to life and was able to use the thing for another 3 years until I was able to upgrade to a new laptop. Probably could have used it for many more years too.
Do any of you run puppy linux on extra bad hardware?
I am aware of lubuntu and the lightweight installatiion of mint, but I wanted to remind others that it exists.
I would love to on my cheap-ass Nextbook Flexx 10. But the last time I heard anybody tried Linux on it, there was almost no driver support for it. I love how small it is, I don’t care if all i can do on it is browse the web slowly and maybe run LibreOffice.

As slow as it is, it looks actually really cool. If this had modern specs it would be fire. It’s running win10? At least it’s somewhat decent. You can run minecraft 1.12 with optifine if you have enough space. It’s a very specific information that I know.
I really wanted to but couldn’t get it to work; it seems awesome! For some reason I couldn’t get my old MacBook to recognize it as bootable. I should try again sometime.
Am I the only one with a PC of Theseus? Like the case is ancient but some of the parts are a year old
I do the same and it has a child which is the last set of internals which are compatible that functions as a test environment/production server (same thing).
Oldest part on my machine is yer mum. She keeps riding it despite the occasional short circuit
Oldest part in my pc is a 7 year old SSD.
chuggles - I’m in danger - of data loss.
I burnt the “trustworthy life-left” of a 256GiB NVMe disk in approx 6 years by writting 25 TiB onto it. :D It still works, but doesn’t hold any important data.
I however do fear the day one of the 1TiB spinning rust disks, in RAID1, die. I created the array in 2020 but the disks are nearly twice as old. (~12 years) There is stuff from WinXp era on those disks that I as a young wipper snaper once developed - irreplaceable.
That was the plan, but i haven’t been able to afford an upgrade since i bought it. i was going to buy a ssd
Is that Mr. Bean in the chair? If not, it should be.
That image indeed is Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean)… I remember this episode. I was a child and this must be st least 15 years ago. But Mr Bean was shopping furniture and he had no room inside the car for himself anymore so he used a broom and stuff to drive the car from the chair on top of it.
It was hilarious.
My PC is over 20 years old. I’ve only needed to replace the GPU twice, motherboard/ram twice, power supply once, and am on my third hard drive.
Ah, the computer of Theseus. My 20year old server of Theseus only has the chassis left of original parts. And an unplugged floppy and DVD drive xD
That’s basically the story of my desktop too.
3rd PSU, 3rd motherboard and processor, 3rd graphics card, case fans, etc., but I still have the original dvd drive (which is unplugged). All in a BTX Antec P180 case I bought in 2007. The power button keeps falling out now, so it might be time to replace it too. But with the price of ram, it’ll be a straight parts swap.
20 years, that’s a long time Dave.
What show is that?
Thank you.
I need to care for my current machine like that. It is a fancy machine and I need to always be ready.
Computer of Theseus 🤭.
I mean, I did something similar with my desktop, until it died because cats.
Urine, hair, or chewed through the wire zapping the fuck out of everything?
The first one. It was shortly before I neutered them 😅. And they aimed directly at the air vents. The GPU and MoBo went toast 🤣.
I lost a Sega Dreamcast that way, luckily I had just bought it a couple days before, so we de-stank it the best we could and exchanged it for a new one 🤣
Using a 11 years old 300€-laptop with 15 years old Ubuntu installation as my main private PC.
Honestly, feels more snappy than ever compared to my brand new Core-i9 2000€ company laptop running Microslop including an increasing amount of mandatory business and security addons…
Sorry, but continuously analyzing all running processes, blocking half of them, and rerouting all of your TLS traffic through a MITM proxy with self-signed certs that break 25% of your software is 100% necessary to ensure the confidentiality of business secrets. And what would our KPIs be without our company-sponsored keyboard logger and mouse tracker?
Also, our internal process relies on this software from 1973 with endless half-baked additions that takes 10 minutes to open, uses 32GB of ram, and idles at 80% cpu and 90% disk iops for some reason.
No, you can not have permissions to delete the icons on your desktop or rearrange your taskbar. Stop asking.
The horror…the horror…
Add to that doing field work with slow and unreliable internet, and it literally takes 30 seconds to open the context menu in explorer. Gotta wait for corporate.exe to time out first. At least opening the start menu doesn’t literally take 30 seconds anymore, after a regedit change to stop it from searching online first.
And then the IT department announced that they are finally replacing our obscure, archaic “VPN solution”. I asked, “you are building the new solution on top off WireGuard, right? 😊”
IT: … … 😊
Me: … … 🥲
They ended up BUYING ANOTHER “VPN SOLUTION” INSTEAD 😭
to be fair, those stupid expensive “solutions” are always the bosses’ idea.
No kidding. In our case, their hands are even more tied, since we are required by law to outsource it to the cheapest possible provider. I’m just disappointed that my country and agency are so poorly informed on how much cheaper and self reliant using open source solutions such as WireGuard and Linux would be.
That’s why they pay them the big bucks.
yeah. those usually market themselves to clueless management instead of real it people.
we don’t have the decision power nor the gullibility for that shady garbage.
10? That’s a rookie number.
10 year old pc sounds like ancient tech, but its from 2016, time goes fast 👴
10 years, that’s like, 1995!
i am pretty sure the year
