thank you for reminding me of the depressing semester my high school sophomore year where a freshman married a 26 year old creepy police officer academy dropout. they tried to do it in-state, but they needed both parental and judicial approval. the parents said “well they’re going to have sex anyways so if they get married at least they won’t be sinning [according to our cult ass religion]”. To the judge. The judge spent an hour yelling at both sets of parents how they had failed at protecting the 14 year old from the pedo 26 year old cop.
A month later, they got married in Reno. Across state lines. Sounds a lot like trafficking to me.
Both of their parents and older siblings were completely ostracized. Younger siblings weren’t blamed, but the older ones were expected to beat the shit out of the cop wannabe. They did not, and once he was married, the change in marital status (even though it was to a child) got him in the door at the academy. But after a year their parents and siblings moved to Utah.
Right? That feels like n appropriate reaction. Thank you.
It’s the thing I think of when they say “child marriage is legal with judicial approval” like, no judge I’ve ever met would stand for that shit (and I grew up at the courthouse, dad had me delivering documents. Wish he delivered some cash for that) but I mean that might just be a product of my locale.
