I went on a date recently where she checked that I knew she was 3-4 years older than me (both in our thirties)

like, yeah, it says that in your profile. what about it? it was a little bit weird. like, ok good to check, but still a tiny bit strange because of how concerned she seemed to be that I knew

My mom was 5 years older than my dad. She was so ashamed of it that she told all her in-laws that her birthday was the same year as his, and therefore she was 6 months older. We celebrated all her milestone birthdays 5 years early with them because she was raised to believe her value was tied to her age.

To this day, her sisters will not tell me their age and I have no clue how old my aunts are. When a culture tells you that getting older makes you irrelevant, it breeds odd behaviour like that.

it’s a sad thing really, people feel the need to disclose “flaws” like that because they rejected for them before (or think they would be rejected) whilst it’s just… bro 3-4 years of a difference stops mattering right around when you turn 25
