Why are compliments so hard to take? My knee jerk reaction is to either make excuses or argue.

Simple, because the compliments aren’t for something you personally value. Imagine if you worked hard on something and want people to notice but instead they compliment something else.
For example my handwriting looks very good, not because I want it to be, but because when I was a child and asked mydasd to help me with my homework he made me rewrite it again and again until the handwriting was immaculate instead of actually helping me with the subject. People saying “Wow your handwriting looks so neat.” Makes me just want to say “Thanks, for complementing my trauma, but have you actually read what I wrote?”

It’s when people don’t get taught that shit is within all of us, the good people just give it the reign less often. Just because you have shitty thoughts doesn’t mean you’re shit, what you actually end up doing is what matters.

What if being kind of shit in someways doesn’t actually mean you aren’t a nice and good person? We all contain multitudes. I don’t actually have any interest in someone who is 100% purely nice and good all day everyday so why would I want to be like that myself? You’re not good or bad, you’re good and bad and that’s great, it’s the ratio that matters

Well, but i am shit or bad. I’m just pretending to be nice for selfish gains or to avoid feeling bad.
I’m not nice and helpful out of altruistic reasons, I’m nice and helpful out of selfish reasons.

Now think of something embarrassing you did when you were a kid. Every day. Forever.

Could you please compensate by creating a city for shit people and make them all move there. It would be fun to know that there is a place on earth where everybody is pretending to be nice.

80% of Germans supported systemic eradication of entire groups of people during WWII

Nice people shot other nice people in the back of the head

You’re probably right that part of you is monstrous, like every other person alive. The key is knowing that part of yourself well enough so you aren’t surprised by it when you betray yourself some day.

I think I’m a terrible person and then I go out and meet some new people that are absolutely despicable and I feel better about my own flaws (I live in a somewhat conservative area)

According to my therapist you all learned that you are not valuable because of who you are during my early childhood from the teacher who bullied me for two years and werent validated from my mom.
