I’ve heard but can’t yet verify that x and reddit are exempt. Still bluesky is still doing this. Enough to make me seriously question their motivations.

    It’s literally what the law is today, what do you mean “in advance”?

    Do you people understand that Bluesky has the greatest need to implement this because it’s less corporate than Twitter and Reddit etc? Bluesky being as open and permissible as it is means that they can’t control what percentage of the network is porn. Twitter and Reddit can have stricter rules that keep the amount of objectionable material below the threshold.

      Bluesky’s position of “oh no we might get sued for violating this law so let’s make sure they have no grounds to sue us” is exactly what “complying in advance” means.

      The appropriate response from any social media org that cares about free speech is “fuck your unconstitutional law, our servers are not in your jurisdiction, you have no authority over me, so if you want some fucking bring it”.

      Lemmy has plenty of porn, but I don’t see Lemmy.world in a frenzy to impose age verification the instant some shitass third world state decides to limit Internet access, do you?

      People here actually believe companies should just accept fines and their execs accept jail on their behalf rather than the company comply with laws they don’t like.

        OR they could grow a spine and actually back up the shit they claim to advocate for. You can simply geoblock that area/state/country and state to your users there that you value free speech and you won’t bend the whims of a authoritarian government. Let the people who are now being denied a service complain and get it changed. Other companies have done this most recently Imgur.

        For a company to immediately bend the knee and institute ID checks doesn’t fly right with me. They’re stating that they are more than willing to change their policies at the whim of whatever government body. Also they are more than happy to start collecting MORE data on users to then do god knows what with. How do I know Bluesky isn’t going to sell said data they’ve obtained? how do I know how secure my ID is with them? And I do have to question their motivations when they consistently, immediately, agree to collect data on their users this way. Bluesky is essentially still a start up and they need funding, what better way to get more cash flowing in then harvesting their users data?

        I wouldn’t trust Bluesky as far as I could throw them.
