Luke’s List (Google spreadsheet)
Antifascist Black Metal Network (not just Black metal)
I would love to see similar lists of other genres.
ABMN is not just Black Metal, their YT channel (findable on Invidious too) is divided in to playlists by subgenre.
SNH also a huge mix of sub-genres and non-metal genres such as EDM, Noise, punk etc.
In terms of non-metal, there are similar projects for neofolk (which also has a tendency to attract the fash), the LeftFolk collective features some great music. The Riihimaki Collective feature hardcore, and DIY Conspiracy are a punk collective.
Thank for sharing! Didn’t realize there was playlists for splitting genres! I lean toward symphonic and nu metal and noticed there are few that match that genre!
I enjoy black metal, I enjoy much less having to become a freelance investigative journalist each time I find a new band that sounds cool
“Man, this bands really good, let me just look then up real qui…aaannd theres the swastikas”
“Do they hate all of humanity or just specific colours of humanity? Please be the first one”
I’m cool with blanket misanthropy but take issue when they get specific…I fucking love Black Metal though so it’s tough.
Yes
Please be just the first one…
I just don’t even look into it most of the time. I just don’t have the energy. If it’s obvious, then I drop them. Otherwise, I’ll just enjoy the music and stay ignorant
just listen to hipster NY bands like Krallice and Imperial Triumphant.
I say this as an obvious Colin Marston fan.
Marston fan
Doesn’t mention Dysrythmia
I’m sorry to inform you that you’re racist
No, they’re not. The fuck kind of response is this?
I’m pretty certain it’s just a joke about all black metal fans being racist because of what half the bands are like
no I don’t know anything about black metal, but if it’s common for bands to be racist, you should research a band to make sure you don’t support the wrong kind
Oh, right. I meant it as in “I hate that there are so many fascists in the genre that checking for them becomes a necessary evil of listening to the genre”. I do check because I don’t want fascists in my playlists
I read their original comment as them being exhausted by it. Being exhausted by something implies you’re doing it, otherwise why would you be exhausted?
I‘m really drunk so are you saying black metal people are expected to be Nazis? That honestly sucks ass
There is definitely plenty of non-Nazi black metal. It’s just that there’s also a lot of actual Nazi BM, including some of the foundational figures of the genre. The general themes of the genre being very misanthropic and usually interested in the various kinds of paganism that Nazis cribbed a bunch of their symbolism from can also make it difficult to spot the Nazis at a glance if they’re not being overt about it
Nah, the scene does have a nazi problem tho
Black metal is, in my opinion, the most poetic and beautiful subgenre in metal. I stayed away from this subgenre for almost two decades because I was scared of all the bad press, but when I finally decided to listen to some bands and artists, I fell in love instantly.
The best part of black metal, for me, is how the vast majority of the songs I have listened to are basically lyrical simping for mother nature. I fuck with it.
Also have a soft spot for DSBM and how it both puts a spotlight on and gives an outlet for deeply depressed and suicidal people. Almost therapeutic for some of them. That’s so beautiful.
As for all the controversial stuff, I find it almost comical that most bands or artists I discover and enjoy has some weird controversy surrounding them if I start looking into it. At this point I just have to assume that it’s a genre that attracts unstable people who decide to make music to have an outlet for their degenerate tendencies and as long as their degeneracy stays in their heads and isn’t enacted onto other people, I don’t really give a fuck what their beliefs are. Just keep it out of the music and I’m good. Simp for nature or make songs about how the grey concrete outside your window makes you want to slit your wrists. My ears will be listening.
I remember being kind of shocked that the original Mayhem related crime cases were all committed by teenagers. When I was a teen myself, I guess I thought it was like grown ups in gangs ala Hells Angel’s, running around being nazis and burning churches and killing people. But it was really just a bunch of bored loser kids with mental problems.
Still, I dig the music. They did something different both in terms of sound and presentation and I can’t hate them for inventing a new artform within a genre of music that is basically modern day classical music.
Btw, Blackbraid is, as far as I know pretty inoffensive, but then again, I haven’t really kept up on the gossip surrounding him. He makes songs about simping for nature. 🤌
Agalloch
Botanist
Enisum
Gallowbraid (Also shoutout Caladan Brood)
Panopticon
Thrawsunblat
Wandering Oak
Absolutely adore Agalloch. We listened to one of their albums a lot in the office for awhile. In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion is one of my favourite songs ever. Everytime I want to give examples of amazing lyrics within black metal, I turn to this song.
Not sure I have heard of the others you listed (except for Enisum. It does ring a bell), but I’ll look them up! Thank you. I’m assuming they all belong in the simping for nature category xD
You got it my dude. I’ve also got a separate list for space if that’s your jam!
Mayhem’s history is so wild.
And said bassist is a white supremacist terrorist.
It really do suck that Jon Nödtveidt had to be so fucking good AND a completely unhinged lunatic killer.
At least he’s dead so I feel less bad listening to Storm of the Light’s Bane
You’re Damn Right.
