What when dark humor is self-deprecating instead of deprecating others? For example, this drawing I made, in which there’s humor from mixing esoterica/occult (alchemical transmutation/metamorphosis) with ornithological behaviors (owls eat rodents) being read by my self-avatar (i.e. a projection of my self) in self-loathe (imagining oneself as a rat/mouse to become dinner for owls). Perhaps one would call this “grim humor” because it’s a subtle Memento Mori, but it seems more of a dark humor piece, a piece I had some legit laugh back when I made. Drawing pieces like this is my attempt to stay sane while trapped into an insane existence.

A digital drawing in which a magician (a fair-skinned, short-bearded, young adult man wearing dark blue prescription glasses and a long, dark blue robe with a hood) is sitting with legs crossed before a glowing red pentagram (partially visible), happily and focusedly reading a book entitled "Ars Transmutatio - How to become a mouse" while he's being watched by an actual owl (a Megascops / Screech-owl, with small/compact body, grayish-beige plumage, pale green eyes, subtle but still prominent ear tufts, long and sharp claws) perched on a tree branch near his shoulder. The owl is looking either at the man and/or at the book he's reading, and is seemingly waiting for the man to complete the ritual, calm (with slightly lowered eyelids and folded wings) and even amused (mouth slightly opened as if hooting/screeching or licking her own lips out of expectatives that there'll be a lunch soon). The book cover shows a whimsical illustration of a tiny mouse before the figure/silhouette of a brown owl, both depicted in a cartoonish manner on the cover. Behind the man and the perched owl, there's dense folliage from a forest, with the man sat down on the grassy ground amidst the trees, in a clear patch. The grassy ground extends to liminality, blending seamlessly with the nocturnal sky which features a subtle crescent Moon, almost to the side of the perched owl.
