Scammers in general, not just hackers, get hired by the government for countermeasures. Jordan Belfort, the real guy whose life was depicted in The Wolf of Wall Street, was hired by the government to identify frauds.
i hated the boys because i thought they were too on the nose with their writing. i’m starting to think they were just ahead of their time and preempted the death of satire. maybe i gotta give that show another try.
It’s more that they blackmail you in an attempt to force you into servitude.
Depending on the conditions a safe government job with acceptable pay isn’t the worst you can have these days… depending on the government of course.
Hackers come to mind, but I’m struggling to think of other criminal skills that the government would direct hire you for.
I don’t know that I would count Confidential Informants as being “hired”, nor someone being hired who resides outside the country theyre working for (an Algerian smuggler working for/with the CIA, for example).
Can anyone think of any others?
Maybe espionage, in flipping assets to become double agents.
Counter intelligence style jobs. Hiring the person who breaks into a military base to harden bases. Hacking in the physical space I guess.
Smugglers are probably used for black ops, but that’s probably more of a contractor type situation than a hiring. Similarly contract killers that are sufficiently good probably have state level protections to some degree.

He did go to banks and offer to educate them on check fraud, and lied about his credentials in doing so.
