My favorite part is the installers.

I just installed a 2004 sierra game (Arcanum - very hard solo, def made for co-op) and the installer threw me back to the early noughties, and it was just lovely. That green progress bar and the wildly outdated game ads were hugely pleasing.

I need a second HDD for storage of the GOG installers I have and it’s killing me that I can only run a handful of games at a time. Stupid small SSD. Currently have two installed, NMS and Zero Dawn and I’d love to finish the Witness at some point in this century. Ugh.

I pretty much only buy my games from GOG, or Itch. I think I’ve bought ~1 game per year from Steam. Proton has been great for linux gaming, and I love my SteamDeck, but GOG lets me keep my games, and doesn’t give me shit for wanting to “play 2 games at once” like Steam does.

GOG is the GOAT, it’s the only game marketplace that I know that allows you to OWN your games. But sadly a lot of games aren’t there and I have to go to steam as backup

🤓 Um, akshually you still don’t OWN the games, it’s still just a license (has been since at least the SNES era if not earlier). The difference is that since you can digitally maintain your own complete DRM free copies of the install media, it’s the physical equivalent of “having the game cartridge” (for old systems without online patches). In other words, if the company says the license is no longer valid then they can’t prevent you from installing/copying/backing-up anyway.

It’s just important to note that depending on your local laws, it’s still not true ownership, but more like “possession”.

The word “own” in this context refers to the fact that you can keep a private copy of the game for yourself. What you are arguing is that the consumer does not own the copyrighted assets used.

It’s like saying that even though I bought a Toyota Camry, I don’t actually own it because I’m not allowed to make a copy of it and sell it. You could use that logic to say no one really owns anything. Maybe youd have a point, but not really in the context if what anyone else here is saying.

You literally download the install files onto your pc.

Even if gog went down forever, you get to keep those files unless you delete them.

If they have the launcher on all major platforms, it will be an excuse to cut the standalone installers. Be careful what you wish for.

Personally, my favorite thing about GOG is that I don’t need a client at all. I can access my whole GOG “library” without a storefront launcher app installed on my computer. Since I keep the installer files backed up, I don’t even need to sign into an account. If I wanted a storefront/launcher app in between me and the games, Steam is a better one. GOG is for launcherless DRM-free games.

They do, but their regions are not aligned with Steam, so for a lot of people in many countries, it’s 3-4 times more expensive than on steam.

It does not matter for AAA titles, as those scumbags charge the same price across all regions in steam anyway.

But for many mid tier and indie games, it’s a tough ask to get someone to pay 10% of their monthly income for a game they can get for 3% of their income on steam.

It’s the only thing stopping me from buying on GOG

Also make a little wrapper script around steamcmd and you can have your modlists however you like. No update breaking it, just playing.

the only problematic (or criticism) thing i know about Valve is TF2’S neglect and the problems with them bloating it with maps, cosmetics, etc and they still make millions of that(previously bots)
CS2 having cheaters and missing half of the content from CS:GO

Also anticompetitive practices and lying about anticompetitive practices. They take a good chunk of every sale unless the game is wildly successful… at which point the developers aren’t in desperate need of that extra income. Neglecting the entire system for extensive periods of time and rarely being proactive about anything that requires they change anything or do actual work. Their servers often break on Tuesdays with no warning or notice or consistent timing. They had forced arbitration for quite a while and only dropped it because some clever lawyers made it extremely expensive for them to keep using it.

In my eyes, they are a bunch of semi-douchy gamer folks who stumbled into being the most successful digital storefront on PC and have dominated by default for literal decades. They are gamers as such and have had a few decent ideas. They also aren’t obsessed with the next quarter and don’t eagerly sacrifice long term for short term gains. I have no problem giving them credit for that. They also occasionally take actions/stances that, whether or not it is their primary motivation, feel pro consumer to their customers. They are mostly just lazy and hesitant to change anything until forced to - they are absolutely fucking rolling in money and don’t want to mess with a good thing.

If there was a well-funded competitor that wasn’t lead by money hungry asshats, I think everyone would feel differently about Valve.

GOG has its own issues, but honestly I’m just happy they both exist, even with their flaws. In this capitalist hellscape full of businesses eager to harvest every cent possible from customers with no regard for anything but their next quarterly profit… I’ll take heavily flawed.

I haven’t played TF2 in a long time so I can’t comment on that specifically. I just wanted to expand on criticisms. There is a lot to be critical of - the lack of proactivity and resistance to change goes far, far beyond whatever is happening with TF2.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t wish them ill - I want them to be better. I want to shine light on the bad and hope the public will force them to be better.

Considering that Valve is headquartered in the US and not known for being especially antifascistic, I’d be rather surprised if that’s not also true for Valve/Steam. But sure, GOG and CD Project Red (same company) aren’t saints, they are a business.
