The backlash against tipping is loud. Restaurant gratuities are holding steady. What are diners really mad about?

You might think it cruel, but the mechanism by which ending your tipping now leads to the end of tipping is clear: servers can’t afford to continue working in the industry and shift to other positions or industries, and restauranteurs are required to raise wages to attract new workers

In the meantime, refusing to tip your server isn’t going to dismantle the system. It’s just going to leave your server with less money.

Where are they supposed to find this other work to shift to? A lot of people only work hospitality because they can’t find other jobs, or can’t find other jobs they can fit into their schedule.

I just don’t go out, which has mostly ended my tipping, but when I do go out I pay for the service I get because doing otherwise makes you a dick.

That’s what I mean by “you might think it cruel.” I’m not suggesting you adopt this method, I’m saying it’s inaccurate to claim that refusing to tip isn’t going to dismantle the system.
