We recently had someone who was unemployed ask for help making rent between updates on their cosplay in the local discord server. Someone offered them a job as a cashier in a gas station. Not a great job, but enough to make rent.

    They refused the job.

I have less than zero interest in giving them money to help make rent.

Okay, so it seems like your point is a very Victorian “take the crumbs or you’re not allowed to complain about your life being enslaved to the bank accounts of rich pedophiles” and my point is “Not only is that the wrong outlook in the first place, but people are taking the crumbs and they’re still starving to death, and it doesn’t make sense to blame the powerless for the conditions created by of the powerful.”

Frankly, good on that person for refusing to put on a little nametag and dance for scraps. If more people were so in touch with their human dignity, power-serving attitudes like yours would soon cease to exist.

No, my point is that your sirvival is your job. If you don’t want to work, then figure out another way to live. Or do like one of those monks and starve to death as a form of protest.

See? A mind so terribly atomized that it’s been surgically separated from it’s own evolutionary history. Do you know why humans run the world? It’s not because we’re the toughest or the fastest, or even because we’re the smartest. One genuis hominid out on the savannah is just lunch. Human beings survived our introduction to the free for all of life by understanding that our survival is coterminous, inextricable. Only the tribe can hunt a mammoth, only a working class can build a city.

Margaret Meade, famous anthropologist, considered society to have begun in the prehistoric cave times, because that’s when we started finding the remains of people who had lived long lives with broken legs and crippled spines, people who had been taken care of by the tribe. They couldn’t gather, they couldn’t hunt, but they were fed and cared for anyway, by people who’s unbelievably harsh conditions would have given them every excuse to leave the injured for dead. But they didn’t do that, because those harsh conditions taught them something fundamental about human life, something that a relatively cushy existence subsumed in capitalist propaganda tries to obscure: that it is and always has been a collaborative effort. That everyone is responsible for everyone’s survivial

The opinion you are espousing is below the level of social development of early cave peoples.

Sounds like they figured out a way to live without working.

I’m still not gonna cover your rent, I’ve got my own expenses.

Is that the new “God will punish you”? Lol

I also don’t think you’ve considered the implications of someone having a broken leg. That means they were doing something physically dangerous with other people. Not sitting at home. Legs don’t break spontaneously.

The capitalist peon mindset on display. Disregard wealth hoarding billionaires, your survival is your job. They have us exactly where they want us.

If our country’s bountiful resources were managed equitably thriving could be everyone’s job but where’s the profit in that for the few.

Well, it ain’t my job, and as you clarified, the very rich have made clear your survival isn’t their job.

So…if you don’t want to make survival your job, then die I guess? Idk. Not my problem. I don’t make money off workers.

Solidarity, mutual aid and unions are the only way we escape the trap but they have every crab pinching for their own scraps. Even if you can’t support others the scorn you display puts you right in their pocket.

If you can’t figure out how to feed and house yourself, I really don’t think you’re about to be leading a unionization drive.

Matter of fact, without a job, I’m not entirely sure what you’re gonna be unionizing.

My point isn’t that your mutual acquaintance should become a steward.

There are myriad reasons why someone might decline a checker position. Maybe they are disabled and can’t stand for 8 hours, as goes the American Way. Maybe they have no reliable transportation and their city has no infrastructure.

Your positioning it as a moral failure is part of the systemic problem that keeps us all from rising above the chokehold the wealthy have on workers.

In this particular case, neither of those things were at play. It’s also not the first job they refused to even apply for.

Someone needs help, fine. Someone needs help twice, okay. Someone needs help monthly every month for the last four years…yeah I’m starting to think help isn’t the answer.
