Canada@lemmy.ca•Canada holds the upper hand in any canola deal with ChinaEnglish
41·3 days agoWhy Canada would follow the USA in this tariff with the current trade war I can’t understand.
Because there are signs that China’s EV market is on the cusp of collapse. Opening up our markets to their cars now would help them more than it would help us.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Winnipeg Transit cites thousands of denied rides as early result of fare-enforcement pushEnglish
131·4 days agoIn a city that has an estimated 92,000+ citizens living in poverty – and regularly sees temperatures ranging from +35C to -35C – it is an absolute embarrassment that city hall chooses to deny people transportation instead of taxing the rich to pay for that service.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Federal investigation probes grocery store competition in HalifaxEnglish
8·5 days agoThe ongoing investigation hasn’t made any conclusion of wrongdoing. But it’s seen some twists.
That includes Sobeys’ parent company trying to stop the investigation, and an announcement in February by Superstore’s parent that it will get rid of property controls from its stores in HRM.
Oh look, there’s Canada’s two largest food conglomerates making the news again.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Manitoba municipalities call on province to reduce police role in mental health callsEnglish
2·6 days agoI’m mostly cool with cops and mental health workers pairing up … as long as it’s NOT cops in charge of the situation.
Mental health workers are trained to de-escalate. Cops are not.

Fuck American rules. Who decided that American rules were the ones to follow anyway???

Canada@lemmy.ca•Canada could face ‘worst kind’ of flu season as experts warn evolving strain may be mismatch for vaccineEnglish
7·8 days agoI just got the vaccine and am hoping it works. If not I’ve got lots of masks, including a half-face one. Those should hold me through the winter.
Fyi — washing your hands every time you’re near a sink works wonders as well.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Canada could face ‘worst kind’ of flu season as experts warn evolving strain may be mismatch for vaccineEnglish
4·8 days agoWhichever variant(s) the southern hemisphere deals with is what the northern hemisphere’s vaccine is made up of. It reverses for the southern when they head into winter.

15·9 days agoMy tinfoil hat moment — What if Alberta goes through with this and it works? And what if the rest of Canada decides that we can do the same with the feds and Canada Post??
Then the US sees what can happen and has a nation-wide general strike and brings Trump et al to their knees???

5·10 days agoA little over 25 years ago I trained in Hamilton as a weather observor for NavCan. One of my fellow students was a meteorologist. He told us that big industries often recruited meteorologists out of university to provide wind and weather forcasts so the business would know when they could ‘illegally’ flare toxins through their stacks … so they would know when the wind would keep the smoke away from gov’t air monitors.
This shit has been going on forever.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Here's what each federal department plans to cut under Budget 2025English
141·11 days agoCRA: $4.1B
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is closing down some programs including the Digital Services Tax, Federal Fuel Charge and Canada Carbon Rebate.
The budget also proposes to eliminate “the inefficient Underused Housing Tax” and luxury tax on aircraft and vessels, which CRA says will help save administration costs.
Seems that rich people are the winners here. 🙄
It’s also worth remembering that the divisions we’re dealing with now were not brought on by my neighbours or myself. There’s a shit ton of rich assholes out there who understand that if they don’t manipulate the rabble (us) to hate each other, we’ll remember we’re supposed to be forming posses to take care of them.
