Have you ever considered that the Prime Directive is not only not ethical, but also illogical, and perhaps morally indefensible?

Canada@lemmy.ca•Labour leaders vow ‘unprecedented response’ as Alberta uses notwithstanding clauseEnglish
141·6 days ago“As the labour movement in this province, our leaders have made a commitment to rise to that challenge, defend the teachers and their rights, defend worker rights more broadly, and to defend our democracy. We have no choice.”
[Gil McGowan, president of the Alberta Federation of Labour] stopped short of confirming whether that response would include a provincewide strike, but said, “it’s one of the things that’s actively under consideration."

Canada@lemmy.ca•Alberta to invoke notwithstanding clause to send striking teachers back to workEnglish
7·6 days agoI’m not in Alberta, but pay doesn’t seem to be the sticking point here - the union is trying to negotiate on class sizes (which AFAIK the province is refusing to even disclose) and classroom supports.

51·11 days agoI took it from a news article from last week, which suggests pretty strongly that that proposal is exactly what was implemented, and they never produced an updated graphic.
But again, I’d welcome a genuine correction.

Weird metaphor to have in your style guide, though.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Canadian ‘beer’ kills 21-year-old in New ZealandEnglish
415·20 days agoWhat’s misleading about it?
The product came from Canada.
The “beer” is in quotation marks, indicating that it wasn’t actually beer.
A 21-year-old was killed.
In New Zealand.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Carney announces long-awaited automatic tax filing, makes school food program permanentEnglish
20·24 days agoI don’t think I’d call it a “catch”.
Carney said that Canadians who fail to file a return when they earn under the basic personal amount means Canadians “who most need benefits often don’t get them.”
Those benefits include the GST/HST tax credit, the Canada child benefit, the Canada workers benefit, the Canadian disability benefit and the disability tax credit.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Why Canadian taxpayers spend millions on U.S. medical treatmentsEnglish
13·1 month agowe don’t have the technology or the expertise to perform the procedure here
I would say this is the part that’s unreasonable. Being the only G7 country unable to perform proton beam treatments isn’t exactly a point of pride.

Canada@lemmy.ca•U.S. resumed trade talks with Canada on Monday morning, says CarneyEnglish
0·4 months agoDespite the move, Canada is still in active discussions with G7 allies to introduce an international tax, with Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne leading that work, the PMO said.
If this ends up happening, it’s important context to this decision.
If it ends up not happening…pretty weak shit.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Green Party dropped from leaders' debates for not running enough candidatesEnglish
0·7 months agoI certainly agree that it’s very questionable to have an explicitly regional party in the federal debates, but for clarity’s sake, the criteria are 2/3 of the following:
-
having at least one sitting MP who’s been elected as a member of that party
-
having at least four per cent national support in opinion polls
-
running candidates in at least 90 per cent of all ridings
After pulling the candidates, the Green Party only meets one of these criteria (the first).
-

Yeah, I lucked out in having nothing better to do at the time. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to catch all of the rest of the series, but I’m definitely going to keep an eye on it!
