So, for context, I have pretty severe PTSD, on bad days I have entire hours that go missing due to dissociation and the like, and my experience with EMDR is that it is wholly inappropriate for the treatment of extremely traumatic memories, and runs a pretty heavy risk of re-traumatizing.

Re-processing traumatic memories is a great way to overcome them, but I think that it is best done with a very slow, very careful approach, at a pace set by, and comfortable to the person going through the process.

EMDR is an attempt to kinda “brute force” the process, rather than slowly peeling away the layers and making the traumatic memory accessible and bearable a little at a time and reprocessing it that way.

Just my thoughts and experiences, not a professional.

I’m not really a fan of approaches like EMDR or CBT, I’m sure it has helped some people, but personally, I think just normal talking therapies where you discuss and explore your feelings in a validating, safe environment is the best approach, no gimmicks, no “one neat trick” bullshit, just talking through your fears, feelings, worries, without judgment.

anyways, sorry to hear that shit is bad where you are, I really hope stuff gets better for you soon <3

  • I think this is quite unfair, and might dissuade people from considering therapy. therapy is absolutely fantastic and changed my life - heck, it saved my life.

I guess it depends a lot on the therapist, but both of the therapists I saw were entirely concerned about what I wanted from therapy, rather than “curing” me or anything like that

  • Hahah! I’m actually gay, so I’d just be thrilled to meet them and wonder why they’re choosing to get their freak on in my apartment, of all places.

I do have sex because my husband isn’t asexual, but yeah, I basically don’t think about sex, when I see sexual content my usual first reaction is kinda like “ew”. It’s not super revolting or anything, doesn’t really bother me much, but it’s like… idk, imagine if everyone was really into like, sharing pictures of shits they took and people really enjoyed toilet humor and sharing bathroom stories. It’s a bit like that.

  • 60 Minutes has been such a fucking propaganda outlet since CBS got bought by Trump’s billionaire buddy, Larry Ellison, and EVEN STILL, it’s not enough for him.

Literally the most soft-ball interview imaginable, the interviewer read a short excerpt from the alleged shooter’s manifesto about fighting pedophiles - it didn’t even directly accuse him!!! - and he freaked out, started saying “I’m not a pedophile” and whinging about how disgusting and disgraceful the interviewer is for bringing it up.

It’s the most self-reporting behavior imaginable.

  • What does Trump have to do with this? Do you really think Epstein was sliding into the DMs of kids on Instagram to recruit victims for Trump to abuse? That isn’t how it works at all.

High profile cases and sensationalised media coverage make the problem seem more widespread and more significant than it is.

Statistics don’t lie. Your kids are much more likely to be abused by you, your friends, your partner, and your family members, than they are by strangers. Do you also sequester your kids from family? Put them in a tall tower to protect them from all the dangers of the world? You are doing your kids a disservice by isolating them, in my opinion.

  • I was also online from a really young age and had a lot of very risky behavior. In my experience, pedophiles are relatively rare, but extremely bad at hiding it. There is pretty much no way that OP wouldn’t realize it. Like, they struggle to talk about anything except inappropriate subjects with kids. Everything you say they try to turn it into something weird. It’s pretty much impossible to be friends with them and somehow not know.

Oh my god, are you still on the “stranger danger” moral panic? That was like… 28 moral panics ago!

Kids are at significantly higher risk of being abused by someone they know than by strangers. The risk to kids from strangers online is hugely overblown.

Kids are also more at risk of abuse if they’re vulnerable in some way, don’t have many trusted adults to share concerns with, and are lonely/isolated. Banning social media for kids just pushes them into more niche platforms.

So, yes, I want kids to have the freedom to talk to whoever they want to.
