5·2 days agoI have spent almost my whole life outside the USA myself, and though I saw these things in American movies etc., I wasn’t really aware of how little Americans know about what’s going on in the world, and how tilted all the information they consume is, in school and in the general culture, until I spent some time living in the USA. You make a good point though, and I wasn’t the most perceptive.

politics @lemmy.world•Trump shares racist image of the Obamas. White House says backlash is 'fake outrage'
17·2 days agoAmericans are subjected to extreme levels of propaganda from childhood onward, and the propaganda is just subtle enough that many don’t see it for what it is. I think it’s hard for outsiders to appreciate this, but if you dig into American news sources it’s quite shocking how twisted it all is.

42·2 days agoThere are two theories beginning to appear everywhere right now: that Epstein worked for Russia and that Epstein is still alive. Both smell very much like deliberate attempts to muddy the waters and confuse people into giving up on the truth. We shouldn’t let ourselves be distracted. Epstein is almost certainly dead and probably worked for Mossad, perhaps with some freelance blackmail for others too. And the main issue now is to get the rest of the files released and unredact the names and crimes of the perpetrators whom Trump’s DOJ is determined to protect.

6·2 days agoAnd they always could be racist and sexist out loud. People just told them they didn’t like it. So it’s about violently silencing any criticism that might hurt their bigoted snowflake feelings. The whole “free speech” and “small government” and “anti-cancel culture” bit was just the lies fascists use while they prepare the machinery of violence.

4·3 days agoAmazon abuses employees, destroys the environment, attacks unions, kills local businesses, sells fake crap, spies on us, supports a violent fascist US regime that threatens to invade my country, and is causally responsible for that godawful stunt where Katy Perry spent 2 minutes in space then made us all stupider with the dumbest interview in the history of dumb interviews. 3·3 days agoThe theology of “burn it all down so God can destroy the bad ones and we good ones can get our reward from God” is childish, selfish and lazy. No wonder it’s so popular compared to doing the kind of hard work Jesus did.

Technology@lemmy.world•Australia said to grant US access to Australians’ biometric dataEnglish
8·4 days agoUntil recently the Canadian government was pushing Bill C-2:
Canada’s Bill C-2 Opens the Floodgates to U.S. Surveillance (EFF)
They have now tried to tone it down a bit in Bill C-12 but there are still serious concerns:
Joint statement: Bill C-12’s introduction solves none of Bill C-2’s problems (Amnesty International)
So Canada’s government talks tough, but in actual legislation they seem oddly eager to appease the USA at the expense of Canadians.

Technology@lemmy.world•Australia said to grant US access to Australians’ biometric dataEnglish
232·4 days agoI believe Canada is also introducing legislation to increase the amount of data on its citizens that it shares with the USA. In the current climate these moves seem crazy. But I guess only fascists and billionaires (and billionaire fascists) get to decide what happens.

Ah, so maybe people actually prefer that to the Republican platform of “we’ll take all your money and give it to billionaires, deny you healthcare and education, kidnap your friends and family and, if you complain, shoot you in the street.”
