  • I’m afraid I don’t see the connection between the assertion that progressivism requires conformity of thought and speech and the fall of the soviet union / the establishment of the neoliberal order.

    It seems to me that, under that regime, there was actually very little pressure for progressives to conform to a single ideal, which resulted in the protests you’ve mentioned being peopled by groups that spanned the ideological gamut from liberal progressives to left-anarchists to literal communists.

    And I don’t think that has changed now that neoliberalism is collapsing, the recent protests are still peopled by communists, anarchists, worker’s unions, independents, democrats and even the occasional disaffected republican. The umbrella that covers the term “Progressive” is only unified in their support for basic human rights and their desire for a more just and equitable society. There’s plenty of disagreement within that coalition and no mechanism to enforce conformity to any one way of being progressive.

    Where, precisely, are you seeing the conformity you claim exists?
