Before I went to a laptop with somewhat shakey suspend power consumption my desktop PC was going on 18 months uptime. The reason it was only 18 months was that we had a power outage. Unfortunately Debian became a bit boring so now I use Arch BTW. So many of the problems I deal with are caused by the insistence we use Windows “because it just works”. Worst part is 95% of my workflow is browser based. Its only bloody stinking Outlook that means I couldn’t use Linux to do everything.

politics @lemmy.world•Not set in stone: teachers are defying mandates to display the Ten Commandments in classrooms
12·5 days agoMy first thought was that there is a gulf of difference between display, and display respectfully… But seriously how does anyone take their religion so seriously when it’s so obviously a fragile veneer, if your beliefs are that brittle maybe time to start challenging some assumptions.

Technology@lemmy.world•AI Doomsaying Is an Aggressive Sales PitchEnglish
7·11 days agoOh when I see AI shilling I see them as tools.
My fault, I missed the “Stop AI” at the end.
He is right, accelerating climate change, wealth disparity and economic collapse is likely going to unite a lot of us, probably not the way he suspects though.

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•East Tennessee commissioner suggests Flock CEO be publicly hanged
12·1 month agoWell how many people on Death Row are handing out juicy consultant work when he gets sick of being in local politics (or gets kicked out)?
Does the UK government outsource that sort of service?
Oh please be somewhere you can sue for racial discrimination… Please!!!

memes@lemmy.world•A friend of mine was recently complaining about this
39·2 months agoThere was a time, before Google showed their hand, that I would go out of my way to leave Google reviews. Good, bad or somewhere in between I would document the customer experience.
Since Google made it clear what trajectory they are on I have returned to the old ways. Amazing service gets a letter, great service gets a quiet word to the manager. Bad service gets a word to the manager at the end of the transaction, terrible service and I just never return again and tell anyone who asks why. Everything in between those extremes gets me acting as a polite customer and that’s about it.
Have I over thought this?

Plus a fine issued directly to the C suite, calculated the same way. Calculated on total pretax package and stock values. Make the decision makers fine payers and their “fiscal conservatism” might come in to play.
In a successful society these people would be prosecuted and jailed for crimes against humanity, failing that I wouldn’t mind seeing a few dozen billionaires and millionaires wind up in debtors prison.
