  • That’s great if you have a Roku or Shield. I don’t. I’ve owned both in the past and don’t want either because they’re both an absolute mess of advertising. I currently have an Apple TV and an Android tablet. Jellyfin is okay on Android (and I emphasize okay and not amazing or great), but the Apple TV is may main viewing device and Swiftfin is the best option and still miles behind Plex.

Particularly because on Apple TV with Plex you can override built in subs with the closed caption styles, meaning literally all subs that aren’t explicitly burned into the image can be made consistent and easy to read. Haven’t seen that feature anywhere else, including on the Shield TV/Pro (I used to own one, got rid of it when Android TV updated to the ad-riddled version it is today). It’s a really amazing feature IMO to be able to have full control of subtitle font, size, style, color, outline, and spacing, no matter what you’re watching.

  • Badly engineered, badly coded, badly built, and badly serviced. Great work, Americans.

You blamed it on Americans and specifically pointed out bad code, badly built, and badly serviced products.

Are you telling me to personally cast the fittings used in my water heater? To hand solder a PCB for my microwave? To machine my own engine camshaft?

Believe it or not, some people actually do that shit.

Also, please point to me where the any of that is specifically a fucking American problem? Your microwave PCB was probably manufactured in China or Taiwan. Same for the rest of the stuff you mentioned.

And yeah, feel free to solder shit. I fixed my microwave PCB that way when a thyristor fried. Microwaves are pretty fucking simple where circuitry is concerned, large components and they even come with a PCB manual, generally above the door. Even if you can’t build it you can at least repair it.

  • Ah yes, the reason Spotify is vibe coded, tech bros make shitty products, and Europe doesn’t have a decent competitor to Netflix is… checks notes … the threat of assassination of European leaders via “diplomacy.”

Bro, I don’t know whether you’re wearing the tin foil or smoking out of it but either way I think you should put it down.

I still say it’s a choice. There are European providers that are hosting alternatives even for the likes of Azure and AWS. Use them. Fuck off from Amazon, Microsoft, and other American companies. Vote with your wallet. Support local products and services. They exist. If they’re not as good, it’s in part because they weren’t supported over American options.

  • But that means the blame is misplaced. The opportunity for competition existed all this time, but other nations rested on their laurels or otherwise corrupt politicians must have stopped competition and/or regulation preventing that technological dominance.

Likely it was simply easier to say “let America do it.” Then there’s no responsibility or accountability and if anything goes wrong, blame America.

We’re a nation of ~340 million in a world of billions. Surely there’s a means for other nations to create the same level of technological progress and rival whatever products and services we have. Our education system is trash and our politicians corrupt. You can’t be saying there was no other country or non-American business smart or savvy enough to make it happen. I’d it’s happening that way it’s because they choose not to out of convenience. It was a choice, and we’re all living with the outcome globally.

I get free Epic games from Prime Gaming, but I refuse to redeem them on principle. You couldn’t pay me to use Epic, or even give them an inkling that I support them.

I considered it briefly when they launched, and then they pulled the bullshit of game exclusivity on PC, which is why I left consoles behind. Because of that, I’ll never purchase from them.

I think it’s worth noting that the US is something like 330 million spread out over a large geographic area. There are mass protests happening, and they’re big, the last was millions of people. But you’re not going to see it everywhere simply due to a mix of demographics and geographic distance.

By contrast, France has something like ~65 million people in a region that is the size of Texas, one of our 50 states. You could fit France spatially into the US something like 20 times. You couldn’t miss their protests if you wanted to, even if it were done by less than a 10th of their population.

but we’re past the point of it being a big scary virus anymore

Just in the last 28 days, nearly 1000 people died of Covid in the US, and there have been over 7 million deaths from it over the last 6 years. And that’s only the deaths that have been reported. Doesn’t account for people who’s lives were cut short due or other complications in relation to the virus. There’s been way too many sentiments of “many of you will die, but that’s a risk I’m willing to take” around COVID-19.

My spouse and I have high risk conditions. Like, the flu nearly killed U.S. back in 2018, no way I’m risking COVID-19. Even just getting vaccinated gave me a bout of laryngitis and messed up my throat and voice for nearly two years. And my wife had worse side effects to the Moderna vaccine, to the point I was worried about potential hospitalization.

Also, I’m an IT Engineer and literally use my brain to make my living, and I’ve seen a massive drop in logical skills over the years among peers, it’s definitely affected people mentally to varying degrees.

As for social growth, I don’t care about that. I’m in my 40s and long past giving shit what random people who see me think about me. My wife is the one person who matters to me more than anyone, and I’m not putting her or us at risk for social cred.

It’s 2026 and I still wear a mask when I’m out. I don’t know why people act like COVID is gone and somehow long COVID isn’t a thing anymore. It’s still mutating, and endemic now, and there are a ton of health consequences to catching it that may not be immediately obvious, including organ damage.

Honestly, 100 mil or even 50 mil is more than enough for any human to live a carefree life, without the need to work ever again and without any material want or need.

I did the math; I’m in my early 40s and I’m pretty sure I could retire comfortably literally right now with around 2.5 million and just subsist on the interest and or investments on that for the rest of my life.

100 or 50 million would just be utterly excessive for any actual needs and the majority of possible wants.
