Because I’m pretty sure a major aspect is that the proles are kept largely docile through bread and circus’s, but Winston does recognize their potential to overthrowing big brother if either the bread or circus’s stopped. It’s been awhile since I’ve read it but isn’t the framing device of the book that it’s a recovered journal from after Big Brother and the Party fell? Or am I mixing it up with 1984 fan theories?
