AI music has become a big problem on streaming services. Remember the AI-generated psych-rock band the Velvet Sundown and the AI-generated metalcore band Broken Avenue racking up streams on Spotify? Remember King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard getting replaced by an AI impersonator after leaving the platform? Spotify claimed it was cleaning up AI slop…
While good. I’m suspicious of this because of my experience with how this has been implemented on other platforms.
It usually is not implemented well and gives a false sense to the user that the content is not AI.
I am much more respectful of places that communicate with their users on their current efforts to remove AI generated content and give easy methods for flagging it.
AI isn’t some “tag” that everyone puts on their uploads. It’s not as simple as just “banning it”.
So, while I appreciate it. We’ll have to see if this is just a “we banned AI” while the platform is still flooded with it. Or, if it’s actually a real attempt at purging AI content from the platform. Because those are massively different things with massively different effort required.
