There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that “my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”
I’ve always loved that quote very much and it very much nails the actual attitudes of many I’ve come across…
I honestly think part of the reason higher education is put out of reach of so many is so that many continue to stay in that rut. If higher education was cheaper/free for most, a liberal education (in every sense of that term) would not be considered something that is “elite”.
