Look up the Fairness Doctrine. When they were first setting up the FCC there was bipartisan agreement to do things to make sure that broadcasters didn’t have a monopoly on news in any town. they had a lot of restrictions placed on them, including how many stations one entity could own and how many editorials they could transmit.

First thing Reagan did was start ‘deregulating’ to make sure the press would never be able to do what they did in Watergate.
