Canada is negotiating a contribution to the European Union’s €90 billion loan for Ukraine as Prime Minister Mark Carney seeks to strengthen ties with Europe and reduce his country’s dependence on the United States.
The Financial Times cited Yevropeiska Pravda, quoting people briefed on the discussions that Ottawa and Brussels hope to agree on the size of Canada’s contribution before the EU-Canada summit in Montreal in late October.
Carney has sought to build an alliance of liberal countries committed to a multilateral international order that has been disrupted by the policies of US President Donald Trump, according to the report. Supporting the Ukraine loan would allow Canada to further demonstrate its commitment to its European allies.
…
Giving loans and make them look good will / charity in a war where we don’t allow Ukraine to win.
Jesus F…
Ukraine needs elections. This conflict needs diplomacy.
This is not a “conflict”, it is a russian war of aggression.
Ukraine will have elections once elections can be held in all of Ukraine.
There was diplomacy, but Russia has broken ceasefire, diplomatic deals (for example Kiev I, Kiev II) and international treaties a multitude of times. Now, understandably, Ukraine refuses to accept another empty deal. Kyiv wants real security guarantees, knowing that past ceasefires have only given Russia time to regroup and prepare for future attacks.
Diplomacy can be done, when it’s a way to peace, diplomacy needs to be ignored when it’s just another tactic of aggression against oneself.
Ukraine’s election right now would be against the constitution
Ukraine needs its neighbor to get their millitary back on their own side of the fucking border.
And then what? Everything goes back to the way it was in that tiny window between Ukraine overthrowing their government and the 2014 Crimean war?
Ukraine’s fake ass nationalist gov is swimming in mega weapons and imperialist foreign money, and their military are pretty much SS characitures at this point.
This idea Canadians have in their heads of the what is happening in those regions is so far removed from reality it’s laughable.
Unironically yes.
Ukraine has the right to be a sovereign country. Russia doesn’t get a fucking say. And whatever soft power they had, they relinquished with the invasion. They have chosen to make long term enemies of Ukraine by invading and meddling. That was a Russian choice.
This is basic shit. Same as Canada gets to be a sovereign country and the fucking yanks don’t get a say no matter what the fuck we decide to do. We get to have whatever the fuck “fake” or real government we want and if we have a nazi problem we get to deal with it without fucking yanks coming and starting to shoot us up. And they also don’t get to influence us like before because their government chose to start shit with us, losing a shitload of soft power with Canadians.
Honestly this is very basic shit.
EDIT:
This idea Canadians have in their heads of the what is happening in those regions is so far removed from reality it’s laughable.
What is YOUR claim for proximity to reality? What is YOUR positionality that allows you to pontificate on us simple minded Canadians?
Dude, get off of Russia Today, it will be good for your mental health…
Of course your account is only 11 days old. That makes sense.
I don’t read RT and I don’t care about the fate of the Russian military. Generalizing me as some misinformed obstacle or a bot, doesn’t address the points I raised.
You didn’t raise any points, you spread misinformation points straight out of the russian handbook on account so young it might as well be in the neo-natal ward.
- Ukraine’s government isn’t fake, it was properly elected.
- Self defense isn’t imperialism
- Their military isn’t any more SS than the americans. They have some extreme right elements in it… LIKE THE AMERICANS
- Canada and Russia are Circumpolar Neighbors, and russia definitly is interested in this shared territory.
Never called you a bot, you are either colonized by miss-information, or a bad actor… but not a bot.
Ah yes, not totally SS, but just SS enough. Got it.
There are fascists fighting on both the Ukrainian and the Russian side. Fascism and ultra-nationalism is not a uniquely Ukrainian issue, it is a post-USSR-space problem. However, arguably there is HUGE difference in terms of the political position of fascists and their claims to political hegemony in each country.
In Ukraine, the fascists do NOT have political hegemony. They are literally forced to obey a russophone-born Jew whose grandfather was a Red Army colonel and has family that died in the holocaust. Electorally they have been ridiculously small, at small single digit numbers. Even with the booster shot that Putin conveniently gave them by making heroes out of them, Ukrainian society has not embraced them and Ukrainian institutions have not capitulated to them. This is also because they are massively constrained by Ukraine’s bid to present itself as a the bastion of “european liberalism”: they don’t have the freedom of movement and initiative to agitate for fascism because the Ukrainian state depends on us western liberal bleeding hearts for its survival and because its strategic objective is european integration, with which hegemonic overt fascism is incompatible. They are still be influential because of their war stripes (thanks Vlad…) but they have to “play by the rules” and play the game at the Meloni level, not the Kassidiaris level.
On the other hand, Russian fascists are operating in an explicitly ultranationalist, militaristic and illiberal space, with an openly and avowedly anti-liberal and traditionalist official ideology and doctrine. The putinist oligarchic regime depends on the depoliticization of the citizenry for its survival, actively suppresses every democratic right that russians ever had, and is deeply integrated with the schismatic Russian orthodox church, which is lead by a paranoid lunatic who blesses nuclear weapons and sacralizes the russian armed forces. Where Ukrainian fascists are politically constrained, Russian fascists are sometimes capable to set the agenda through the “military bloggers” sphere, and are so strong that at some point they even got to threaten the regime, as the Wagner melodrama showed (yes they lost, but if you think that after Prigozhin, the Wagner fascists have not been accommodated in the regime, I have a steel factory in Mariupol to sell you). But more generally, they are a very well functioning apparatus of a state that is ideologically extremely well aligned with them.
Where Ukrainian fascists are denied hegemony for the survival of the state, Russian fascists are coopted by the state and sometimes even threaten it. The political climate in Russia gives the fascists every boon and accommodation they might wish for. I can’t think of a place where it would be easier to do fascist politics. Like, if there was a “let’s play fascist ideological hegemony” video game, Russia would be the …tutorial level, while Ukraine would be at least one level up from normal difficulty.
And, let’s be honest: the fascists on both sides are much stronger today precisely because of Putin deciding to invade. If you’re looking for “who carrries water for fascism”, look to the Kremlin aqueduct…
Can i ask you an honest question? How much of an opponents military needs to be SS-like before its ok for you to invade a country, claim its land, and kill its citzens?
If 1/1000 military members are nazis, can you invade them? 1/100? 1/10? At what point is it ok to target civilizans with drones?, blow up shopping centers, Blow up a maternity ward. “yes, officer, i orchestrated the rape of thousands of women, but 1/10 of their military remind me of the SS”
This you?
Obviously it is.
Self reflect on the down votes than cuz you have a genuinely trash take on this.
Russia want to rusify Ukraine they refuse to widhdraw and refuse to return Ukrainian land
Pretty sure elections in Ukraine would be criminal, and pretty sure Putin isn’t interested in diplomacy.
For those who don’t understand why giving Ukraine $ is a good thing:
If we don’t and Ukraine falls, we will have WW3 and YOU will become a soldier for your country to fight Russia.
Shame they’re not doing that (loans are self serving)
For Europe of course but Canada is a bit different given the enemy on their border. Ukraine falling doesn’t put Russia closer to them but it does make the US position in the world weaker.
Bringing in Canada means Europe is willing to fight Russia and the US. That’s not a benefit to them.
