I feel like both positions are wrong (and obvious attempts to either make this product more impressive than it currently is or avoid meaningful regulations). There is not currently evidence that LLMs pose such an existential threat to humanity, but that’s not to say there won’t be.

A much bigger threat as it stands is these companies having such terribly safety processes that their technology keeps acting in unexpected ways. These are not companies that should have a financial stake in energy infrastructure, not to mention the further consolidation of power by these douchebag billionaires.

    as fast as we can

This does let him sell the most gpus. Must be coincidence.

There are many issues with too fast.

    1. financial crisis from overspending. There is myth that there is GPU capacity shortage. A recent model, Jev, is a low compute cheaper way to do classification

    2. continued scarcity of useful products/ram

    3. end result of government bailing them all out with compute for military and surveillance

    4. Profit from end of world.

Shockingly the CEO of the company that would benefit from regulatory capture of AI says that, and the CEO of the company that would suffer from regulatory capture of AI says this. What a shock…

Man who sells shovels very concerned about digging regulations and notes that digging a hole to the center of the earth unlikely to kill all humans by 2030.

Jensen Huang should be forced to wear a polo shirt whenever he does this shit. I genuinely think he’d stop.

    That’s a crack in the AI-bros alliance.

On one side, AI companies running out of cash for their expansion race and looking for excuses to pause everything but more importantly everyone else with them.

On the other side, the only corp that actually sells something, invested shitload of money in the AI hype and needs making profit on hardware at an insane rates to recoup his investments otherwise he’s toast.

they want to pause to give them time to regroup so they can peddle the AI shtick as surveillance tech to governments.

Just watched a majority report video, the gist was the A.I. companies want regulations to prevent other companies (like say from China) competing in the US, so they’re spreading this b.s. alarmist drivel about how we’re 6 months away from skynet.

    What he means is:

“You should keep buying our expensive product as fast as possible, no matter what anyone else says!”

Right? Like this should be obvious and shouldn’t need explaining. Shovel seller saying to keep digging deeper.

If AI wins or doesn’t, he will still make all the money. No, reason to not trust him.

They’ve got so much money tied up in chatbot infrastructure that when the bubble pops, they’ll be in a bad way. They’ve got to desperately prop it up to survive.
