Read: ten million Americans are caught in a cycle of predatory loan-sharking for petty cash because they’re fucking broke, and we refuse to fix any of that.

Its likely a large percentage of this is people addicted to online gambling, sports betting, future predictions markets and they’re dipping into predatory loans to scratch that itch more and more. A recent study found over half of young men have those apps installed on their phones.

If ever you are in a position to need such a service, you are already genrally fucked. But those shitfuck companies thrive on those in so much poverty who are desparate and take full advantage of them.

Robbing from the rich is one thing. Robbing from the poor is beyond the pale.

I only used payday loans 20 years ago when I was young and dumb(er). And I mostly used it so I can buy weed quicker before payday. Shit is a scam.

Why would anyone ever feel compelled to tip these people? I understand people who fall victim to predatory loans, but if you keep tipping the payday lender and that is what causes you to enter a debt spiral, that sounds like a self-inflicted wound. Being broke because you tip the payday loan company is crazy.

My jaw hit the fucking floor when I read the part about the tips.

I begrudgingly tip 15% for decent/good service at restaurants, since it’s a shitty, exploitative system that should be abolished in favor of servers making normal wages, but I don’t want to take that out on a nice person just doing their job (ironically part of the emotional exploitation that keeps it alive). (The 20% “standard” nowadays is obvious bullshit fed artificially by things like automatic tip suggestions. My order more than kept pace with inflation, so get the fuck out of here with that “18%, 20%, 25%” horseshit.) Subpar or bad service gets no tip, because duh; at that point, I’d actively prefer if I didn’t have a middleman and could just do it myself. But exceptional service gets 20–25%. (Edit: Always cash too to avoid as much as possible putting it into a slush fund for their shitty fucking boss who won’t pay them a living wage.)

I always tip my barber $5 because it’s a small business, he outright does a fantastic job, he’s not afraid to push back on ideas of mine and suggest something I consider better (but not in a rude way), and he absolutely respects that I just sit there quietly most of the time. He’s definitely going above what I expect him to do.

And I’ve tipped at least a few retail employees who really went out of their way to help me when I don’t think it would be too awkward.

I’m trying and struggling to think of a less justifiable business to tip than a fucking payday loan app. Tipping culture is so fucking out-of-control; I sincerely hope someone starts regulating it somehow.
