Vast majority of ‘old redditors’ still believe reddit is their home. Its not, there are so many more normies on reddit now, that it is legitimately a normie space. And making it a walled garden is the only way Reddit Inc can grow.
And age verification is a thing. I miss the excellent discussions. I don’t see them here. It’s a list of comments, no reactions.
The very reason I switched to Lemmy.
Funny thing is that apple freezes the app (even if you are logged in) and pops up an “age verification” window. You can just close it and continue browsing.
(… At least for now)
How funny, it’s been a logged out only experience for me for years now.
It’s been a nothing experience for me for years. I don’t miss it, honestly. Life goes on.
Is it “read only” experience?
For those of you who are interested and still want to go on Reddit for any reason, Redlib still works… kind of. My personal instance running Nachtalb’s fork still works, but not sure for how long
There are still a small shortlist of public instances that are up, and ppl are pushing fixes that circumvent whatever shenanigans Reddit is pulling. Although, some folks are suspecting that Reddit SWEs are monitoring the redlib project with close attention & trying to shut down any workarounds the redlib team finds
Front page of the internet my ass
I wonder if Libreddit (i think it’s name) still works
It’s Redlib now. And it still works for the time being.
Alr then
To anybody who needs to use reddit (for answer to some weird question someone posted few years ago) and they are blocked by “sign in to continue”. Ublock origin works pretty well. I have fennec (fireflox clone) with ublock. Someone told me use the zapper of ublock when that pops up, it has worked for me well.
I was testing just now to see if it works and I haven’t got that pop-up. It is possible ublock has already leveled up or I just didn’t use reddit for long enough. It was without logging in.Nobody cares about Reddit these days. The bots took it over years ago. Like so many things, there was a time when it mattered.
It’s been fucked since the leadup to the 2016 murican election. Wasn’t perfect by any means before that, obviously already had paid shills and astroturfing, but that seems to be when everyone realized how much you could use it to influence people. Really kicked into high gear then
No matter how I look at it, this will only hurt their user base. Where are they going to get new users? I’m no tech billionaire, but I struggle to see how this benefits the site in the long term. Even if they revert later, the damage will already be done and the site will lose any relevance it once may have had.
I’m not interested in Reddit per se, just curious why they’d think this is a good idea.
The thing with reddit, and why it used to be so much better than other corporate media, is that they’ve always under-monetized their users. Facebook and such earned at least an order of magnitude more per user.
If reddit loses half of its user base and doesn’t gain a single user, but 10x’s their revenue per user, well, they’re still making 5x more money.
Unfortunately that’s not how it works. Once you have a sufficiently large userbase, the network effects are enough to sustain them. A ton of people use facebook still and that has been a logged-in experience forever. Same with instagram.
You don’t have to be signed into Instagram at least to view things someone has shared with you. It’ll nag every now and then but it doesn’t stop you.
For me it stopped me plenty of times.
That’s the thing with money and companies. The only thing that is important is gains in the current quarter. Nothing else matters
When I joined reddit it was well over ten years ago, and the reason I joined was because I searched the net for something and got quite a few answers from there.
I then looked up certain things there but over a bit of time, probably a few weeks or so. Then I decided to join it. (Then it went to shit, the app debacle happened and I left).
Anyways the only reason I joined was because the info/entertainment was easily attainable. If I were forced to join or login all those years ago then I would’ve just moved on.
Christ, most random websites get instantly dismissed if I feel like I’m being forced to join it.I haven’t even needed it for technical issues lately. So go ahead, I guess.
I will miss the occasional search results from Reddit, particularly for gaming related stuff.
Considering my account was banned, I guess I can’t browse reddit anymore.
hey, yesterday I got a three day ban in a topic about Indiana Jones punching Nazis. I said, we could need some movies again where a hero punches right wing extremists. It was flagged as call to violence :D
See that’s the intersting bit. They still let you browse even if you are banned. They won’t let an ad watching product go to waste.
I had it deleted since it was of no use to me anymore.
