I’m not too versed with civilian suppression tactics, but is actual tear gas sprayed from a can not a tremendously stupid idea as is? The slightest amount of wind will shove that right into your face. I thought gas was only used with mortars or at least in throwable cans, i.e., at a distance, and close range is reserved for sticky fluids.

AI aside, this would be pressurized pepper spray (the fog kind, not stream) rather than tear gas (CS). Tear gas comes out as a hot white cloud from grenades. One form is the hand-thrown can you mentioned, another is the 40mm type that gets thunk-ed out by a launcher. Instead of exploding, the fuze activates an incendiary element which spews out a cloud of heated gas, carrying CS particles with it.

Side note, don’t try to grab one with your bare hands thinking you’ll return to sender and save the day. Very hot, there’s fire in there.

If you get tear-gassed, stay calm. Running away blind can hurt you more than a little stinging dust. In a crowd, a trip can become a fall can become a trampling fatality so try to avoid that.

The stuff that’s that color that they spray from cans is a type of pepper spray.

It’s only behaving like a cloud of gas in this image because it’s AI generated.
