We are built on car transportation. Some people I know drive 2 hours to get to work in vehicles that average 15 miles per gallon (6.38 kmpl). At 50¢/mile it would be a national emergency.
Edit, I think these people are full of it and only quote the longest times to get home on the very worst days. I’m betting they take a little more than an hour to get there.

5€/gal would mean 1.32€/lt. I don’t remember seeing gas that cheap in the last 10 years at least.
