Wrestlers wearing royal stuff is kinda parody, plus I assume that the story is that it’s more “this guy was strong enough to claim the title of ‘king’” instead of being born into it, making it somewhat merit-based (most royal lineages started like that, but once inheritance comes into play it’s just a bunch of douches who are barely not terrible enough at their job to keep the title).
