The whole point of Brexit was to control immigration, it failed to do that. So now they have uncontrolled immigrations and economic pain on top of it from being out of the common European market. Now, they’re seeking to go back to the EU in some way while keeping the immigration issue unaddressed for the time being, aka back to square one. Truly a 4d chess move.
It gets even more hilarious than that: EU immigrants were roughly 50% people with higher Degrees or above, and this was replaced by immigration from South East Asia which have way fewer people with such educational qualifications.
As it so happens, Britains higher value added Industries were using more highly qualified manpower than Britain can train, so the very people who stopped coming after Brexit - for EU citizens Britain only beat other non-European countries in terms of appeal as a destination to migrate to because there was no need for any kind of Work Visa (and thus none of the problems such as the risk of exploitation by the employer sponsoring it) to go live and work there and EU citizen rights in Britain were pretty much the same as the locals, but once those things were out, then Britain is just an English-speaking country with the same entrance conditions as the other ones, with shit weather and worse pay than some of the others.
Further, the likelihood that all the 27 EU members approve Britain’s return to the EU without some major concessions (like Spain getting Gibraltar back) - which is something that requires unanimity - is pretty much nil and even then Britain can forget all about the exceptions they had and maybe even having its own currency (Euro adoption is now mandatory for new members), so even if Britain managed to get back, it will be in worse conditions than before.
