When the electorate is polarized, you win by energizing your base to get more people to the polls. Abandoning your base one vulnerable group at a time not only fails to curry favor with the fascists that centrists desperately want to befriend, it also depresses turnout from your base as well. But since centrists like moving to the right and don’t want to stop, they treat their positions as sacrosanct and it is the voters who must capitulate.
