The Michigan Senate hopeful who backed the 2024 'uncommitted' movement is campaigning with the failed presidential candidate who armed Israel's genocide in Gaza

On Tuesday, Michigan Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed spent the day campaigning across Detroit with former Vice President Kamala Harris.

This decision was a gut-punch to anyone who remembers the role the Biden-Harris administration played in the Gaza genocide, continued seamlessly by President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

El-Sayed, who has made clear his embrace of capitalism and condemnation of Palestinian resistance to settler colonialism, has always had the hallmarks of an establishment candidate.

And when a reporter asked at a Detroit press conference whether campaigning with Harris, after his own support for the uncommitted movement, might backfire with Arab American voters, El-Sayed turned on the questioner:

“Is Vice President Harris the same as President Biden? Was Vice President Harris running for president at the time we were uncommitted? Answer the question… You’re asking a question based on false premises, so I’m just getting you to clarify your premise… Thank you. Next question.”

Harris herself has answered his question. Asked on the US talk show The View in October 2024 what she would have done differently from Biden, she said: “There is not a thing that comes to mind… I’ve been a part of most of the decisions that have had impact.”

After President Joe Biden dropped out, the uncommitted movement took its demand for an arms embargo directly to Harris as the party’s nominee. She never granted it.

El-Sayed’s response drew swift backlash on social media, with critics deriding the uncommitted movement as a scam and condemning his arrogant dismissal of the contradiction the reporter had raised.

    This is not going to help him. I have no idea why anyone thinks puting her back in the spotlight is a good idea. It’s even more confusing why El-Sayed would want to share that spotlight with her.

    She should retire, but I understand why they keep her around and that she wants to give the presidency another try. She doesn’t have a platform to run on, at least I haven’t heard one.

    She’s going to compete in the primary, and following her loss she’s going to drop out and hand her delegates over to the next establishment democrat in exchange for whatever consolation prize that she wants (probably a Supreme Court appointment). She’ll be the only living person to serve in all three branches of the federal government.

        Hard to say, as much as I hate it both her and Clinton have a weird amount of support with what I like to call girl boss libs. So it could just be trying to rinse out whatever they can get out of her without pissing those annoyances off.

            Agreed but I’m talking from the perspective of what a strategist may be considering. Trust me I have no love for politicians and when it comes to them I follow the mantra of life is cheap and a politicians life even cheaper, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t butcher the corpse before you toss it in a ditch metaphorically speaking.

      I think the philosophy is that el-Sayed would be weakest with normie establishment moderates, so bringing Harris in to say she’s excited about his candidacy shores up that group.

        It’s what he’s paid to do, and the quicker Democrats and “progressives” get it through their thick skulls that neither the Democrats nor the DSA are friends, but meant to maintain the least preferable, but still well-within-acceptable-bounds of predatory fascism capitalism, the better.
