The defense attorney said the cases involve “many thorny legal issues” and one question in particular: “May a homeowner install a camera in his home without telling housekeepers or guests, or does the guest have a greater legal right than the homeowner?”

How the hell is this a thorny legal issue? It should not be a question at all.

It’s one thing to have a doorbell camera or a security camera inside that films your front door and foyer or living room. It’s another thing entirely to have a hidden camera in the bathroom.

Yes, and even then it’s basic courtesy to warn your guests, and it should be illegal to not notify your tenants/homekeepers of the camera (at least in my country it is, and it’s illegal to install them in any living quarters - including the bathroom -)

A cursory search on the internet came up with an: “in the US, it depends on the state, provided that you are not recording anyone naked” (so in general no cameras in bedrooms, changing rooms and bathrooms - in other places the legislation is much more obscure, depending on the state).

Another thorny legal issue for republicans:

Do the “human rights” of black slaves trump the property rights of their owners? And how are you supposed to protect your economic rights other than by beating the shit out of them?

Do the “privacy rights” of guests and tenants trump the property rights of their landlords? And how are you supposed to protect your economic rights other than by recording their every move on your property?

It’s basically the same fucking question. And it’s such a thorny and contentious one finding a balance must be hard.

Because in a sane society, basic human rights clearly do not have precedence over any other rights, right?
