Tires are a gauge pressure, meaning pressure vs ambient pressure. 14.7 psia (absolute) at sea level. And getting less as you go higher elevation. 12.7psia ambient is ~4000ft elevation 10.7psia ambient is ~8500ft elevation So if it you start at sea level with 40psig in your tires, when you get to 8500ft elevation and measure the tires you’ll be ~44psig. If you start at 8500ft at 40psig, when you get to sea level they’ll be ~36psig.
