Not new, but I looked it up today and thought you might find it interesting.
That’s a loooong way down to get to:
“Named after a dance.”
That being said, being named after a dance is just one theory. Truth is no one remembers anymore.
Growing up in Saskatchewan, my brain almost naturally began to delineate a difference between hooded sweaters with a zipper (hoodie) and hooded sweaters without a zipper (bunny hug). It’s a completely arbitrary naming convention that my brain decided to pull from its ass one day. But it stuck and I continue to use it.
I also grew up in Saskatchewan, and I make the exact same arbitrary distinction.
Same
100 years ago there was rabbit overpopulation. The pelts got turned into something akin to a pullover sweater with hood.
That’s just a theory.

really? I didn’t. Are you on Mobile or something?
So why do Albertans call it a kangaroo jacket?

…we do? Never heard of this and I’ve been here all my life.
We don’t?
We used to. Kangaroo jacket (AB) and bunny hug (SK) both were fairly common in the '70s, then kangaroo jacket kind of fell by the wayside.
In 54 years I’ve never heard it, but I’ll take your word for it.
Bunny hug though, that’s definitely a thing I’ve heard from people out of that PA area.
Well now I’m curious. I’m 57 and the youngest of three, and I remember it from my youth.
The kangaroo jacket one actually makes some sort of sense, with the pouch on the front. I have no idea what bunny hug is supposed to be, maybe there was a brand in that area with that name.
