I will never call myself an American but I am from North America.

Yes, the continents have those names.
But on those continents, there is only one country with America as the prominent part of their country’s name. Only one country whose national anthem includes the phrase “God bless America”.
Only one country whose citizens refer to themselves as Americans.
If you say “Americans” to any non-pedantic person anywhere in the world they will think of one, and only one, country.
Yah it’s so odd we have Africans,Europeans, Asians but what do we call birth or south Americans. Maybe we need to change the continent names to distance from the US.
