This is clearly a sign that the product failed to draw in enough customers and its viability was overhyped.

Hopefully, it is the start of the AI bubble bursting.

My guess is that Disney saw how fucked their finances are and pulled out of the deal. OpenAI killed Sora as a response because without the Disney money they can’t afford to keep it going.

Chime in if you disagreee, but there’s really only 2 reasons a company like OpenAI shuts down a core service like Sora:

    • The service is hemorrhaging money to the point of financial unsustainability.
    • The service is not popular enough to drive investor hype as a “loss leader”

We already know that OpenAI is losing money on their generative “AI” products across the board, to the tune of billions of dollars per year, and the economic woes that come from rising hardware prices, oil and gas shortages, and another pointless war in the middle east only make the situation worse for them money-wise.

And so that really just leaves me to conclude that Sora has not maintained the level of popularity and growth needed to impress investors as Q1 comes to a close. Whether it’s users, subscriptions, or time, they must have looked at the numbers and really didn’t like what they saw.

Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of the ridiculous “AI” bubble, and the start of a new tech sector correction.

I wasn’t expecting good news in the world of AI today, but I’ll take it!

Now the question is, which Jenga block is being pulled?

It was speculated each video cost like 5$ to generate, any wonder they are shutting it down when they can no longer see it generate “hype” for OpenAI. Sora was basically costly advertising for OpenAI, that relied on Sora clips going viral

      Damn. Makes me wish I had utilized the revolutionary power and i n f i n i t e potential of A . I . more responsibly while I had the chance.

Had I known that it cost Sam $5 a pop I would have spend WAY much more time researching combination of random words to make the most terrifyingly depraved looking shit while cackling like a moronic chuckle fucker.

You really don’t know what you have until it’s gone…sad.

Edit: Oh wait, it’s still up! There’s still time for me to to use this incredible technology to create great things to add to humanity’s zeitgeist!

Cost seems like the most likely explanation. Plus there are risks associated with video that don’t necessarily come with text. But this machine runs on debt, and I have a weird feeling about this one. /puts on tinfoil hat. Possibly Disney privately soured on OpenAI, decided they’d rather do it in-house, and threatened a bunch of legal action over IP. Possibly OpenAI needs a bunch of compute for the massive domestic surveillance the Pentagon has probably tasked them with, and this was just the easiest way to get it. Possibly it’s yet another marketing stunt, so when they come back with Sora 3, it makes more of a splash. /takes off tinfoil hat. Or they’re just shedding dead weight before the IPO.

Disney execs would kill 2% of their audience, individually, with their teeth if they thought it meant they never had to pay an artist again. For my money it’s OpenAI that backed out because they’re not able to deliver on whatever horse shit story they sold Disney about what “AI” can do.

It all runs on debt, but the ai companies are having problems finding new lenders and the enormous cost of video generation shortens the runway.

    FUCKING LMAO!

All that money invested into AI slop that was surpassed anyway by lesser quality AI slop like Fruit Love Island.

The AI industry cannot not take a fucking L

Maybe I’m a pessimist, but I doubt this is the last we’ll see with regards to video generators. They will probably bring the service back under a subscription model or something. As if they would totally scrap all that hard work creating the generator in the first place.

I get everyone is cheering but I can’t bring myself to let my guard down. Someone please change my mind and make me see the half of the glass that is full, thanks
