Muffin is a chinchilla, and she’s a bit over a year old now. They are native to South America and used to be made into fur coats. It takes about 300 Muffins to make a fur coat, so the wild population was really taking a nosedive before breeders figured out how to breed them.
The biggest roadblock in breeding chinchillas, btw, is that they are such divas that they would rather starve than eat suboptimal pellets and hay, and prospective mothers’ standards are even higher.
