Imagine if a pump truck, ladder truck, fire Marshal, and 5 vollenteers all showed up to your burning house, and then did nothing, allowing the fire to spread to surrounding structures and landscape. You sue the fire department, and the judge said that the fire department has no requirement to actually put a structure fire out even if they are present and able.

The fire department proceeds to harass you by smashing your car windows or pushing your car with one of the engines.

This post isn’t about a shitty fire department.

I am a firefighter and you’re not wrong. The shit I hear some of these assholes say is sickening.

On the other hand the nature of the job doesn’t give near as much of an avenue to act on fucked up beliefs. The culture won’t tolerate that behavior on scene either. There’s also a hell of a lot more accountability: you will be fired, possibly criminally charged, sued, and/or ostracized.

I.e. even if a firefighter is a piece of shit they need to at least act like a decent human being when interacting with the public.

I wonder how long that’ll last. Also, if it stays around, I wonder if there’s something society can learn from that structure and apply to other parts of society. I wonder if there’s any way to improve it. And I wonder why it’s as you say, in the first place.

You’re not wrong, but I give a bit of leeway to people who are willing to put themselves in danger to help others. Not too much though.

meanwhile 98% of firefighters drive the equivalent of a Dodge Ram without need

sure they’ll put themselves in danger… in certain conditions, and for money. ask them to respect cyclists or drive a smaller vehicle so they don’t run over kids, and nope that’s too much to ask, they have golf clubs to fit in there

Didn’t a cop arrest a firefighter because he wouldn’t move his truck while trying to save someone’s life?

And ICE detained that group of firefighters tackling a burning wildfire a month or two ago.

The bright side, it also happens the other way around. I’ve seen video of a firetruck driving through a cop car because they wouldn’t move out of the way during an emergency. And the police dept couldn’t do a damn thing about it. Karma in little pieces here and there.

in most areas - at a fire like that we outrank them. i’ve yelled at a few who park like shitheads, and tell them they’re fucked because now i have 5” hose charged laying over the ground and they couldn’t drive their car away if they wanted to. They embarrass easy with their weak egos.

I’ve seen firefights tell off cops who are in the way. Including one parked in front of a hydrant, a superior hot real upset at that one.

I’m my department’s open anarchist / communist. I get the usual flak but I get a lot of people asking actual questions especially because I openly consider firefighting a part of mutual aid. Especially volunteers. The right wing trump folks, I push back on and have turned more than one around. They’re stupid, so it’s easy to talk circles around them.

In mine, I’m amazed at the amount of people who openly agree with me when I claim my left-wing status and start ranting about not having a left wing party that matters, who openly clamor for a union, who happily agree about the incredibly wealthy bosses taking in millions while some of our coworkers live in cars… and then they start spouting the fox news talking points a few minutes later. Especially with immigration/national security/“think of the children!” matters, it seems like we are culturally infected with maga rot even in otherwise ‘normal’ or even ‘leftist’ folks.

i like using what i have no idea if it’s “real” rhetoric but some form of “so there’s a line that’s ok with you?”

the US blows up a girls school. No problem? But Russia blows up a house and its bad? So what’s the line? 10 civilians? 1000?

if you toss in a dig that indicates they’d just throw up dip spit into their scba if we ever had to respond to a blown up girls school anyway… they usually shut up. no offense if you dip. (stop)

How does their political ideology change the services they provide? They’re not the thugs the cops are by any stretch.

They still put out fires, and save lives.

I’ve met a lot of firefighters who act like cops. One of them lived in my apartment building and his girlfriend routinely had a black eye.

Ive also met good ones. But more often, theyre entitled dickheads just like the cops.

I worked in a field related to Fire/LE for awhile and there was some movement between depts. Even more common were family connections though. Everyones cousin/brother/grandpa was also a cop/firefighter.

You couldn’t talk shit about anyone without checking their last name.

Or “Fuck the EMS” either while we’re at it.

Am firefighter. Can confirm. Once saved a woman and handed her off to a cop who happened to be at the doorstep and … he got a medal. 😂

Doggos need help getting out. Cats though? They usually just find a way.
