True allies
Embarrassing for Alberta and Canada, but extremely based on the part of the Saddle Lake Cree Nation. I wonder if US First Nations might be able to pull a similar maneuver?
Honestly, it sounds like a great, non-casino way to bring in money
Amazing. Real leadership on display here; human-centric values.
Actually so fucking cool
Hell yeah! Turns out the most staunch defenders of canadian rule of law, democracy, and sovereignty are the very people that signed hard earned agreements with a parochial Britain to protect exactly this. Canada advances democracy through our relationship with our indigenous, should we continue to embrace democracy.
I’m sorry, are you suggesting it is somehow Canadian values that did this? The same values of the state that continues its genocidal campaign against indigenous and First Nations peoples in many ways including systemic barriers to healthcare? Canada wants people like this gone, and you’re going to act like you get to say its values are somehow pure by default because victims of genocide used their own resources to meet a need the state refused to meet on purpose?
This is an example of what Canadian “rule of law,” inflicts on all of us, and how little it would take to simply not rely on brutality for this system to work. I really hope this was just one of the most misinformed comments I’ve ever seen, because it genuinely reads like an attempt to colonize this kind of anti-capitalist and anti-colonial action; and that’s disgusting. You people were about to elect an explicitly trans-genocidal party into office less than two years ago too, was that a good example of Canadian “democracy?”
First Nations are amongst the most pro crown, pro-supreme court of Canada, pro-court groups in Canada because they have relentlessly pursued justice through court cases and have slowly established a strong predicent.
98% of First Nations voted to stay in Canada during Quebecs last referendum and the Albertan chiefs have flat out rejected leaving their relationship with the crown behind.
You are right the past is riddled with genocide and violence but Canada and its relationship as well as constitutional status of first nations has grown tremendously.
Yes, that is a form of colonization, that is not because they subscribe to “Canadian values.” They don’t “support” the crown, they are forced to navigate this legal system and maintain the precedent they have because the state would kill them faster otherwise. You know you’re wrong when you say that is in the past too, or are you also going to pretend that you don’t know about mining runoffs, intentional ecological destruction, or the fucking suicide rate of children in First Nations communities?
What a disgusting, bootlicking distortion you just made. This doesn’t feel like ignorance, it sounds like you’re actually trying to warp this reality in support of their continued genocide. And look how many dipshits in this community who upvoted it; bloodthirsty and spineless people.
You are also stealing their voice. There are tens of thousands of indigenous who do identify as Canadian and you are not allowing any of that.
Navigating legal systems is what we all have to do. I would argue the crime of neoliberalism is just as damning to the human journey and all souls are forced to navigate this too. The only way to fight colonialism and neoliberalism is through realism.
Also, many chiefs openly argue they willing decided to side with the crown to get recognized as sovereigns because they seen the long term value. You are stealing their voice too and infantalizing them.
Edit: to underscore the irony and realism: First Nations in Quebec and Alberta have made the case that their status and relationship with the crown protects them from republican separatism as Quebec and Alberta offer little assurances they would recognize their sovereignty.
Oh, you’d argue something? I’d love it if you could fucking provide even four books on this topic that you used to construct your “argument.”
You even know who Patrick Wolfe is? What settler-colonialism is? I know you don’t give a shit about whether you infantalize people. Best case scenario here is that you are just ignorant, think “I’m not bad,” is a reasonable basis for your understanding, and use the language this system has forced onto you. Except, what you’re saying is quite literally a popular occluding talking point that capitalists deploy.
I’m grateful to creative folks who find a way to take care of each other despite these obstacles.
