The official said the agreement grants the US permanent access, basing and overflight rights, and would continue to apply even if Greenland becomes independent

No they don’t actually they want Denmark over USA but they want independence the most, maybe that will change with new polls and such given threat but no strong evidence yet.
Greenlanders want independence, on the proviso that quality of life doesn’t decrease. They want Denmark enough to accept its financial contributions.
We all agree the they don’t want to be a US puppet state.
The latest poll shows that they want independence, but only if it doesn’t result in a lower standard of living. Independence at any cost is still in minority.
