For a lot of people it’s not because of any gods, that’s just a convenient justification. Colonization is usually about material goals and benefits for the colonizers. Boiling it down to gods erases this aspect, so I’d caution against doing that.
I think we should be cautious about viewing religion as an excuse when it comes to doing something immoral. You never hear that religion is just an excuse when people are doing religious based charity, it’s always assumed to be an honest expression of their religious faith.
I’d argue it usually is an “excuse” in charitable cases; that is to say, people already inclined to do charity might say it’s because of their religious beliefs. I just don’t really care about that because a good thing is good.
