Ukrainian sci-fi: Everybody just fucking dies. Nobody’s fault, really. And there’s meaningless but meaningful love. Also, it also functions as a very long music video for the song “Voyage Voyage”, whose lyrics the author of the manuscript has clearly seen translated. (Referring here to “U Are the Universe”, which I liked a lot!)

As someone who read more Honor Harrington than he should have, the American one is a bit on the nose.

He and his descendants live for so long, that sex loses meaning, and becomes some sort of “adult playtime” that he, inevitably, has with his actual children. Granted, the children are also like a thousand years old at this point too, but, still.
Lazarus Long? IIRC he’s also his own parents due to time travel shenanigans. During his early adulthood, he gets a one night stand pregnant and never sees her again. A couple hundred years later he transitions to a woman, for reasons, goes back in time, gets pregnant from a one night stand with a drifter. Both are him. Robert Heinline was a little messed up.
He started writing normal books again after having a brain tumour removed.
I never thought to meet someone else who read those.
Guilty pleasure, really.
I only wish the audio books were available in non-amazon sources.
Russian sci-fi: every single person in the future is white.
Tbf, that’s pretty close to how most of Russia already is.
To be equally fair, though, that’s probably mostly because it’s a very racist country with an ethnonationalist government.

In US 60% of people identify as white.
There’s big population of Tatars, Chechens and bunch of other Asian ethnic groups. No idea how are they represented in Russian cinema though.

My family migrated from the Soviet Union in 1989. My mother still watches Russian media. They’re all white. All of them. Ever.
Case by case thing, maybe?
My mother’s side migrated in 1800s, they still speak Adyghe and they still correct people calling them Russian.
Tho they identify as white …mostly because Circassians fucking are.

I’m from what is now Ukraine I consider myself to be white but if your family hails from around that area you’re more white than me.
identify doesn’t mean all of them are white. Lots of kalmyks, buryats and yakuts identify themselves as russians. it’s been an umbrella identity for quite a while.
At one point in my life, every time I got a serious stomach flu, I would watch Threads (1984) so I could enjoy my life.

Yeah I neglected to add that Vander Meer’s motivation for making the anthology was specifically to try and crush the preconception of Sci-Fi this post is a part of!
British one sounds realistic
Polish Sci-Fi: two guys wake up from hibernation in a world where men went extinct and have to convince all the women that world with them was actually not that bad and old order should be restored.
and the credits roll over a still frame of an toddler’s penis. that movie was messed up.
Well, it’s from the 80s… Other than that it’s very mild when it comes to any sexual content but very funny. Best Polish Sci-Fi ever made. Not that Polish cinema is famous for it’s Sci-Fi (or fantasy for that matter. anyone saw Polish The Witcher? 😂 ) but definitely worth watching.
Polish Witcher is actually better than Netflix Witcher. At least it sticks to source material… somewhat.
On the Silver Globe enters chat. it’s a mess and a slog to watch at times, but gotta respect the ambition.
Agreed, Polish Witcher is so bad that I was literally ROTFLing during some scenes but it still somehow had a better vibe than the one from Netflix.
