They’re also coming out of the cabinets and cupboard. And it’s explicitly stated that chip sleeps in the cupboard. If the sentient dishes love where dishes go normally, I feel like that means they likely needed to toss the inanimate ones to make room.
No so the staff got transformed into animated objects, it wasn’t objects that got animated.
