Unfortunately, trying to set up this particular “rage bait” is also ignorant and uneducated. The numbers we use are derived from Arabic numerals. But modern Arabic numerals does not look like the ones we use in the Latin Alphabet. They can also change a bit depending on which arabic country you’re in.

If you’re an average “westerner” you probably don’t know what modern arabic numerals look like. And learning them would be required to know which symbol means what.

That being said. Teaching children that different children across the world have different symbols for things is still a good thing to teach them. While also teaching them there are other systems than our base 10 system. Such as the Duodecimal system.

My only gripe is that we can’t determine whether it’s Arabic numerals or Hindu numerals. It’s more correct to say Arabic-Hindu numerals.

After 2016 I spent a lot of time on reddit talking to Trump voters to understand why.

Overwhelmingly they believe things that aren’t true. Basic misconceptions of the world cascading in on one another culminating into the stupidest vote of their life.

One guy thought Obama was a vain man because he named his healthcare plan Obamacare. When I told him the healthcare plan was called the Affordable Care Act, and that Republicans and the media called it Obamacare as a way to hurt it, his brain couldn’t process it because why would the media parrot Republican talking points if they were all biased towards Democrats?

You can understand how this individual would make this mistake. He pays just enough attention to be misinformed. Three generations of right-wing propaganda, the world’s most disciplined messaging machine repeating the same lies and half-truths have absolutely run roughshod over this type of person.

There’s a lot of “Heal the political divide” being said to mean “meet them halfway” when what it should mean is the ignorant and prejudiced learn and the media machine dismantled, like how “Heal the healthcare class divide” means “Help poor people see doctors affordably”.

I ask them “why is trump calling for the deaths of politicians if you agree there’s too much political violence and dissonance?” Well they didn’t hear it on fox news that he called for their deaths so it’s probably the woke media lying. They will ask for everything and give nothing.

And also they don’t care that much so they won’t look into it (look into it, i.e. click 1 link to his post calling for politicians to be killed). And even if he did do it he was probably joking. And even if he wasn’t they found 1 insane person on YouTube who is calling for people’s deaths too, which is the same as the president that they elected saying it to hundreds of millions of people I guess.

It’s base 60 actually. With up to 5 𒌋 meaning 10 followed by up to 9 𒁹 meaning one. I actually should have put a space between the 60s place and the 1s place and formatted it as: 𒁹 𒌋𒌋𒌋𒌋

It’s a lot easier to read in clay because you bunch the characters up within their place, and if it were used in modern day it would likely be autocorrected to make it easier

Base 60 does make dividing evenly into 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, etc. really easy.

If I were raised in China or something and used to memorizing / recognizing dozens or hundreds of symbols, then having individual symbols for the numbers 0 to 59 might be nice. But, as someone who only learned a 26 letter alphabet and 10 digits I like base 10 because it’s quick to parse a number.

How did the Babylonians write 61? 6 𒁹 symbols, a space then a single 𒁹 ? Was it easy to tell the difference between say 21 and 3?

61 would be 𒁹 𒁹. Essentially the same way we write 11. It can be compared to 𒁹𒁹 meaning 2, which would appear bunched up as opposed to separated. Plenty of room for very large errors and I suspect if it’d stuck around you’d probably see something like a distinct 1, 9, 10, and 50 tallies to indicate “hey this is where this place begins” as well as a zero. For 21 it would be 𒌋𒌋𒁹, and for 3 it’s 𒁹𒁹𒁹.

Cuneiform is a writing system highly constrained by its medium. It’s just pressing triangular reeds into clay. Any shape you can’t get out of that isn’t in the writing system. Using conjoined tallies makes sense for it.

It seems to me that with a reed you could also underline something or draw a slash between items, so you could do 𒁹 / 𒁹 for 61 vs 𒁹 𒁹 for 2.

It’s actually something that has been done pretty much by anyone in power in the past who was trying to consolidate their position without actually giving the people what they want.

Hitler’s regime started by rounding up scientists and scholars purely to make sure nobody got any ideas that were detrimental to his power.

It’s just sad that the voters for (extremist) right people don’t see that the endgame is just for a select group, not for all, and they see themselves as part of that select group whilst they’re actually part of the other.

So MAGA folk think they’re part of that elite group that will benefit from right wing dismantling of social programs and not part of poor immigrants whilst they’re actually economically closer to those poor immigrants. Not just America, though, Germany is going in that direction as well right now and in Europe more and more of these voices are being heard.

That’s such a stupid response. As if I’m going to dig through old comments looking for the places where it happened? This isn’t a court of law, and it don’t have to present evidence to you. Especially if you’d just going to sealion about it even if I do.

And for the interactions that happened in person? How do you want me to prove those to you? Do you suggest I should carry around a device always on record and keep a record of every conversation I’ve ever had?

Everyone who’s interacted with a tankie knows glazing pol pot is exactly the kind of thing they do. Many have directly seen them do it. I don’t need to link specific examples for you.

Base-10 is objectively terrible, though. Too many fundamental principles of geometry rely on 1:3 and 1:6 ratios that can’t be properly depicted in Base-10.

If there were a god, they would have given us 6 digits on each hand, inspiring us to develop a base-12 number system.

        All number systems are base 10. It’s just that we define the 1 in 10 as meaning x x x x x x x x x x quantity. Binary is base 10 with 10 equating to 2 in the decimal base.
