So you can string them on a necklace.
Walk through a forest with a couple dozen empties strung around your neck and trees know what the fuck is up.
is-is it not where you hold it with your prehensile penis?
I mean that’s not what it was designed for but if it works for you…
Shit who even knows what it was designed for.
Oh, my sweet summer sausage.
In Canada, the maple elfs are the ones that collect the syrup. After the great syrup catastropy of 1909, we learned the hard lesson that the elf rings (that is the technical name for these loops) could not exceed a standard unit elf-span. In Canada, we have a saying: "standards and codes are written in syrup. "
After the great syrup catastropy of 1909
Was that anything like The Great Molasses Flood?
Instantly sprang to mind!
I think the shape is supposed to be reminiscent of a gallon jug, where the handle actually fits a grown human’s finger. By scaling it down we’re left with a handle that feels idiotic.
Vestigial
Extra cost of glass handle < increased sales from cuteness
Same thing with tiny coffee cups. What the fuck is up with that. I can pinch it sure, but I don’t wanna.
You mean Canadians don’t have them attached to their belts like a hip flask?
As is the fashion of the time!
Its a useless leftover from when the containers were stone jugs.
They still are. Just melted stone.
Silica is a mineral. aka Quartz and it will melt. Stone jugs are made from clay and is vitrified not melted. its fired in a kiln like brick.
Well, “vitrified” literally means made glassy, and the process involves melting the silicates in the clay, so there are some similarities.
Only in process and loosely at that. Vitrified clay or brick if you prefer is much harder than silica glass.
You must be fun at parties!
No I actually mean that, I would listen to this shit drunk until way early morning.
You must be fun at parties!
Same I bet they just laugh and laugh.
Screw that geology rocks!

Hah! Dumb stone agers!
Vestigial handle?
What were they for on stone jugs, if they were just as small? Or were they not?
The jugs were not that small and the loop was much bigger. I had my first drink of alcohol out of a stone jug. It was moonshine and the jug had originally been a maple syrup jug.
There so you can hook them to a Carabiner and carry them with you. As is tradition.
It’s like no one has heard of hiking syrup before.
There are those h o wonder, and those who DO. and we are the men that DO.
The syrup replenishes what you lose through diarrhea as you push to the top of the mountain
It’s to hang it from a tree so the bears and ants can’t get it
10 million ants vs 1 grizzly bear.
Who wins?
Either way we lose
meirl
it’s to keep the butthole from closing around the top in a manner that would be dangerous.
Behind every OSHA directive there is a harrowing tale.
You’re telling me I’m supposed to stop before the loop?
depends on where you start. ;)
Depends on skill level really.
Syrup used to be stored in large, thick, clay jugs, a gallon or more. These vessels were pored by means of resting them on your shoulder and hooking a finger (or two!) into the loop for control.
These smaller bottles have vestigial loops.
Proper drinking technique demonstrated (on left):

Next you’re going to tell me we drank honey straight from the full-sized bear, aren’t you?
evolution is amazing
In 3 million years these bottles will look like crabs
My mind is going to South Park, but I feel like there’s something more here. Care to outline it for a dummy?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carcinisation
An obscure phenomenon for much of the time since its discovery, carcinisation has become more widely known since 2019, having been the subject of a popular internet meme.
And
Beginning in 2019, carcinisation has found popularity as an internet meme. This parodies carcinisation, purporting that crabs possess the “ideal body plan” and conceptualizing the evolution of other animal groups, especially vertebrates, of eventually developing crab-like bodies (often being examples of speculative evolution).
Now it’s just good enough for hanging a fancy price tag.
Curse you and you clarifying and mistery crushing explanation that gives sense to the bottle!
I wanted to think about the probably horrifying mystery for a while more!
Maple syrup’s tail bone?
Hook catch to lower the bottle into hot water before serving the syrup warm.
Source: I love me some french toast, waffles, and pancakes.
Did … did you just change my life?
I don’t like the number of dots you used. I do like your enthusiasm about maple syrup. An ellipsis has three dots, what the hell did you just construct. I’m using the reverse sandwich method on you because I think it fits with the toast theme.
Have you been eating your syrup cold this whole time?
Like a fucking heathen, apparently.
I never knew… I never knew…
I like the cold syrup on my breakfast stuff, its more viscous and creates a nice hot/cold heterogeneity.
Found Adam Ragusea’s Lemmy account.
Finally! At least Adam Ragusea probably understands that mayonnaise or sour cream shouldn’t be mixed with ketchup or mustard, but should be put side-by-side with them so both are tasted separately at the same time.
I have to admit my usage of that word increased massively after watching his videos.
Yes. The syrup has to be room temperature, then warmed by the food. Having to top-up with cold syrup late in the meal because you misjudged the ratio is unpleasant… maybe there is an application for this technique there, but I also don’t care to put pre-warmed syrup on as a rule.
Not the same person, but yes. You enlightened us, oh apostle of the maple syrup god!
Yes
Just room temp, since I keep mine in the pantry.
You can also put the bottle in the microwave for a few seconds. Keep a close eye on it though, things can go bad really quickly when you do that.
Edit: be sure to remove the cap first!
No, wedge that cap closed as hard as you can! Live life on the edge!
Just take the cap off and microwave it like a normal person from the past 2 centuries.
Dawg, I don’t even have a microwave. Fuckin kitchen gadgets smdh
Hmm. Okay.
I suppose the bottle might be hot even if you don’t completely submerge it. But, then what, do you hold it with a gloved hand? If it’s not that hot, then why would I need a hook? I accept this is the intended use, I just don’t see it being particularly useful that way.
It’s also possible this is just vestigial decoration from the older, larger jugs.

Heat transfer is not instant. It is proportional to the difference in temperature between the two objects. I assume you know that.
Lowering the bottle into very hot water for a short time will warm the syrup. The water may be too hot to touch but the bottle is not necessary too hot to touch after being dipped.
You do not fully submerge it. Take the lid off and hang it submerged 3/4 of the way.
I normally hang it from a string tied to a wooden spoon over a tall pot.

Put the bottle on the table to cool a bit while you finish up setting the pancakes. I didn’t wait. I just wrapped the bottle with a little towel and poured it hot on my pancakes.
Wait do non-canadians not have the little sixth digit on their hands for carrying these bottles??
Not on my hands.
Sadly, no…Our heads also don’t flap about when we talk. Makes it really obvious when you’re an American trying to pass yourself off as Canadian abroad.
Hey! Screw you buddeh!
I’m not your buddeh, guy!
Dew claws?
Feel sorry for them and their lack of the syrup digit.
You can get by with just a pinky but it’s tough when you’re still young and in school. Kids can be so mean.
It’s where you hold the bottle when you drink it. Keep your pinky in the air. Everyone will know you are a gentleman / lady.
Also, that cap always makes a sticky mess.
Lick it clean before screwing the lid back on
Can you record yourself doing it to show us how it should be done?
How is that a problem when you properly jug it down in one go?
