Marco Rubio is on resignation watch from both sides of the Atlantic in the expectation he will quit to launch a bid to be the next US president, The Independent can reveal.

Insiders say the US secretary of state and White House national security adviser is preparing for the race to be the Republican nominee in November 2028, with JD Vance currently his main rival.

Even before the disastrous midterm results – resulting in the Republicans losing control of both the House and the Senate – senior party sources in the US and senior figures in the UK government told The Independent that Mr Rubio could quit his senior role in Donald Trump’s administration.

The sources doubled down on that expectation, after the midterms gave a damning indictment of the Trump presidency, with the Democrats seizing Republican strongholds such as Kansas and Texas.

I kinda don’t understand this one.

Rubio hasn’t been directly involved with the worse disaster, Iran, and was seemingly positioning himself to be Viceroy of South America and the Carribean, which certainly doesn’t bother Republicans. He is adhering to the traditional US policy of regime-change following the CIA playbook; he doesn’t have the staggering improvisational incompetence of Hegseth. He really hasn’t done anything “wrong” relative to the rest of this abberant administration; heck, he doesn’t even seem that pro-Israel and was the first public official to implicate Israel as the tail wagging the dog in Iran. Maybe that’s why they want to get rid of him?

He has been all in on trump, to the point of nausea. His ICE views are horrific. I think this last election has proven that r’s need a new set of people behind them. Rubio sucks ass.

To a Republican that just shows you’re a good businessman. Rick Scott committed the largest Medicare fraud in history, it was public knowledge, and then he got elected governor of Florida. Now he’s a senator. It’s like a precondition to run for office as a Republican you need to be a criminal

I don’t know, pretty sure he had a hand in the indiscriminate destruction/drone striking of all those “drug smuggling” vessels in the Caribbean. Pretty sure there was another one today.

Agreed, but Hegseth was more directly in charge of those, (reportedly ordering a double-tap to kill survivors–civil suit coming to a court near you) and, again, this isn’t about Rule of Law but embarassing the regime–and killing civilans in SA is nothing out of the ordinary for the US.

Yah agree, but you don’t get to be called the self proclaimed czar of the Caribbean or whatever dumb name was given, was it vice roy maybe?) without giving some direction here, even as sec of state…hegseth was likely following orders from???

The look on Rubio’s face during the first Zelenesky white house meeting (the “have you even said thank you?!” one) was priceless.

Conservatives are definitely beating the drum for Rubio now that they can see that Vance is going down with the ship. He’s been a favorite to run in 2028 for a little while now.

I think you misread that. He wants to resign to start his bid for president for all the reasons you just gave.

Rubio is the Secretary of State, he cannot escape being tied to Trump’s foreign policy disasters; foreign policy is the main job of his office.

lol they’re going to find someone to be the fall guy and they dont’ care who it is, or how justified. or even justified at all. it should be nauseatingly apparent by now that trump can point his geriatric finger at anyone and say “______ is his/her fault,” and now that person is the new RINO/traitor/satan, and it doesn’t matter what anyone says-- that person is done for

I don’t know who is going to be satisfied by this burnt offering.

      maga will, 100%

also, just to be clear: fuck rubio. if he’s suffering, then i’m glad

He is 100% Israel first for rule over America. The slip of “we had to attack Iran, as our last best chance, because Israel was going to” was just normal US policy stance.
